Lady Bucs Soccer tie Parkersburg before dominating rival Lewis County

Senior Captain Chloe Cale faces off against rival Lewis County.

TENNERTON — Head Coach Robert Greenough’s Buckhannon-Upshur High School Lady Buccaneers soccer team was back in action this past Saturday, August 20 as they welcomed Parkersburg to Tennerton for their home opener. Coming off of a disappointing 7 to 0 loss to Morgantown, the Lady Bucs were chomping at the bit for the chance to redeem themselves on Saturday. Two first half goals from junior Ava Hollen gave the Lady Buccaneers a 2 to 1 advantage heading into the locker room for halftime. It looked as if Coach Greenough’s Lady Buccaneers were about to break into the win column, with their 2 to 1 lead holding well into the second half. However, a late goal for Parkersburg led to a tie, as the Lady Buccaneers had a win stolen from them in their home opener.

The Lady Buccaneers were much improved from the season opener, playing with better energy and chemistry; however, watched the game slip from their grasp late, culminating in the tie. The Lady Bucs attack was active but was slightly outpaced in terms of shots on goal by a nine to seven margin, while their defense was outstanding aside from two late lapses that led to scores. Offensively, Hollen scored both of the Lady Bucs goals, while defensively junior goalkeeper Kyndal Davis recorded seven saves on nine shots on goal.

Still left searching for their first win of the season, Coach Greenough’s Lady Buccaneers welcomed rival Lewis County to town this past Tuesday, August 23. The Lady Buccaneers dominated Lewis County from start to finish, finally turning in the dominate, well-balanced team performance that Coach Greenough was looking for as they coasted to a shutout 8 to 0 win. The Lady Bucs wasted no time scoring, as sophomore Harley Dean drew the game’s first blood, scoring in the eleventh minute to break a scoreless tie. The Bucs struck again just a minute later, when freshman Mallory Hughes scored in the twelfth minute to extend the lead to 2 to 0. Sophomore Grace Queen pushed the lead to 3 to 0 later in the first half before Hollen scored two consecutive goals in the twenty-first and thirtieth minute respectively to further extend the lead to 5 to 0. Senior Chloe Cale scored the final goal of the first half to wrap up a big first half for the Lady Buccaneers attack.

Up 6 to 0 at the start of the first half, Cale and the Lady Buccaneers picked right back up where they left off, as Cale scored her second goal of the game in the opening minutes of second half to push the lead out to 7 to 0. Freshman Sidney Hollen scored the game’s final goal in the forty-ninth minute to wrap up scoring on Tuesday as the Lady Buccaneers cruised to their first win of the season in dominating fashion, 8 to 0.

Coach Greenough’s team enjoyed almost a flawless day against Lewis County, holding an 18-0 advantage in shots-on-goal and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Davis led the Lady Buccaneers defense, recording the shutout win without even having to face a single shot on goal thanks to the stout performance from her supporting back line. Hollen and Cale paced the Lady Buccaneers attack to their first win of the season, each accounting for two goals apiece. With the win, Coach Greenough’s Lady Buccaneers moved to 1-1-1 so far this season.
