CLARKSBURG – When the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc swimmers enter the pool, there is a good chance records will fall and that was the case when they competed in the Big 10 Conference Championships this past Saturday at the Harrison County YMCA.
Sophomore Cadence Vincent broke the conference record in both of her events – the 50-yard and the 100-yard freestyle – winning both events in the process.
She swam a new record in the 50-yard freestyle of 23.97 and a time of 51.60 in the 100-yard freestyle.
The 100-yard freestyle time also set a school record and is 0.01 seconds faster than the state record of 51.61. State records can only be set at the state meet.
Junior Cameron Zuliani was the other Lady Buc to break a conference record as she did it in the 100-yard breaststroke winning the event with a time of 1:11.23.
She also took first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.60.
For their efforts, Vincent and Zuliani were co-high point winners.
As expected, the Lady Buc relay teams continue to win as the foursome of Alayna Whitehair, McKenzie Reynolds, Vincent and Zuliani won both the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.18 and the 200-yard medley with a clocking of 1:57.00.
Whitehair had a pair of top five finishes for the Lady Bucs as she claimed third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.71) and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.57).
Reynolds had a pair of top 10 placements as she took sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:05.93) and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (29.51).
The other top 10 Lady Buc finish went to Lillian Fetty who placed ninth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:17.25).
“I was super proud of all the swimmers,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Will Squires. “We had lofty goals for this meet and the swimmers met those goals head on.”
The Lady Bucs, with just six swimmers, finished third in the team standings with 142 points.
Bridgeport won the conference title with 224 points while Fairmont Senior was second with 168.
“It's hard for us to compete with some of the larger teams, but we managed to individually score well in all of our events, and I was most impressed with the relays,” said Squires. “To finish third is impressive.”
The Lady Bucs are adding a home dual meet this Thursday with Elkins.
“We are hoping to schedule an impromptu meet this week with Elkins to serve as one last refresher before heading into the regional competition,” concluded Squires.
The Region I meet is scheduled for April 10 at Salem University.
