Lady Bucs roll past Musselman with an 8-2 victory

TENNERTON – Following two straight postponements of games, the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc soccer team was just happy to be back on the field Saturday afternoon when they hosted the Musselman Appleman in a non-conference game at Ted Crites Alumni Field at Tom Hasbrouck Stadium.

The Lady Bucs, after having games last week against Capital and North Marion canceled, cruised to an 8-2 win.

“Our shot selection was much better for the most part,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jackie Zuliani. “We scored some really nice goals. We played very well overall and worked well together for the win. We moved the ball well and worked it well out of the midfield to our wins and really utilized the width of the field.”

Madison Ware started the scoring for the Lady Bucs with an unassisted goal after a scramble for the ball inside the six-yard box in the sixth minute of action.

Sara Sonnak tied the game for Musselman in the 16th minute but just 33 seconds later Brooklyn Maxwell played a rebound in the box to return the lead back to B-U at 2-1.

Cameron Zuliani took a low shot from the right channel to the near post after several dribbles and beat her defender in the 19th minute to increase the Lady Buc lead to 3-1.

Catherine Oliveto got into the scoring act when she dribbled down the right channel and nailed a shot to the far post in the 24th minute of the game to up the B-U lead to 4-1.

Zuliani came back for her second goal of the game two minutes later with a shot to the near post after playing a pass from Ware.

That gave the Lady Bucs a 5-1 advantage going into the break.

Oliveto notched her second goal of the game in the 52nd minute after a long run to increase the Lady Buc lead to 6-1 and 13 minutes later Kennedy Samargo got into the scoring act with a shot over the keepers head after playing a cross from Maggie Nolte to give B-U a 7-1 lead.

Lacy Daum scored an unassisted goal for Musselman in the 72nd minute to make it a 7-2 game.

Maxwell wrapped up the scoring in the last minute of action with a penalty kick.

“Our defense played well with the exception of one breakdown where someone came though unmarked which led to a goal,” Zuliani stated. “We just need to remember that defense wins games. We must protect our side of the field at all times.”

The Lady Bucs owned an 18-6 lead in shots-on-goal and a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

B-U keeper Claire Coffman made four saves in net.

The win improved the Lady Bucs to 5-2 overall.

They were slated to play Grafton at home Tuesday evening.

The Lady Bucs will return to action this Saturday on the road at Wheeling Park.

The game will start at noon.

“Overall we keep seeing improvement and that is what we want and hope continues,” Zuliani concluded.
