Lady Bucs record three wins over Roane County and Elkins


TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc softball team put together an epic come back here Friday evening scoring eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to get past Roane County by a 13-12 score.

That comeback set the stage for the Lady Bucs the rest of the weekend as they came back on Saturday and to beat Roane County again by a 14-4 score in five innings and the knocked off Elkins later in the day by an 8-4 score.

In the Friday win against Roane County, the Lady Bucs capitalized on an incredible 18 walks by Roane County.

Roane County scored three runs to get the game started in the top of the first, but the Lady Bucs scored one in the bottom of the first when Alyssa Rohr scored on an error and tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Rohr.

Roane added a run in the top of the third and added four more in the top of the fifth to make it an 8-3 game.

B-U chipped away at the lead with two runs in the Ciara Melton received a bases loaded walk that scored Rohr and Brooklyn Bryant followed with another walk that scored Jordan Cutright. That made it an 8-5 game.

Roane County chased across four runs in the top of the seventh to for a 12-5 lead.

The Lady Bucs then pulled off their epic comeback with eight runs in the bottom of the seventh.

With one-out and two runners on, Shelby McDaniels uncorked a three-run home run to centerfield to make it a 12-8 game.

The Lady Bucs loaded the bases again and Brooklyn Robinson was hit by a pitch that scored Alli Robinson.

In an incredible sequence, Robin Ball was hit by another pitch that scored Melton and Morgan Parsons walked to bring home Bryant. That made it 12-11.

Audrey Gaudet drew another walk that scored Brooklyn Robinson to deadlock the game at 12-12 and then a third-straight walk by Roane, this one to Rohr allowed Ball to score with the game-winner.

The only hit in the whole inning was McDaniels home run.

The Lady Bucs were outhit in the contest by a 16-6 margin.

Rohr led the offense with two hits and three RBIs while McDaniels had one hit and RBIs.

Melton earned the win in a complete-game effort as she gave up six earned runs on 16 hits while striking out two.

In Saturday afternoon’s game with Roane County, they visitors scored first with a one in the top of the first.

The Lady Bucs responded with three runs in the bottom of the first when McDaniels hit a one-run triple, Alli Robinson hit a one-run double and Brooklyn Robinson hit a ground-out RBI.

Roane County retook the lead with a trio of runs in the top of the second for a 4-3.

The Lady Bucs took the lead right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second when Gaudet and Olivia Caynor each scored on a pair of Roane County errors.

That gave the Lady Bucs a 5-4 lead.

They erupted for six runs in the bottom of the third for an 11-4 advantage.

Rohr hit a one-run single, Alli Robinson drew a bases-loaded walk, Melton crushed a two-run double and Bryant reached on an error that scored two.

The Lady Bucs ended the game on the mercy rule in the fourth when McDaniels earned a bases loaded walk and Robinson hit a two-run single.

Rohr, Alli Robinson and Melton each had two hits in the win.

Rohr tossed a complete game not allowing an earned run on two hits while striking out seven.

Just like in the other two games, the Lady Bucs fell behind in the first inning as Elkins scored three times.

The Lady Bucs made it a 3-2 game in their half of the inning when Melton smacked a two-run single.

Buckhannon-Upshur tied it with a one-run single by McDaniels in the bottom of second.

Elkins took the lead back with a run in the top of the third to make it a 4-3 game

The Lady Bucs kept the lead for good following a four-run fourth inning to make it a 7-4 contest.

Kennedy Samargo scored on an error, McDaniels hit a one-run single and Melton blasted a two-run single to account for the scoring.

B-U tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning McDaniels hit a one-run double.

The Lady Bucs pounded out 10 hits with McDaniels going a perfect four-for-four at the plate with three RBIs.

Melton earned the win going five innings while Rohr notched the save pitching the final two innings of the game.

The three wins left head coach Levi Bender’s squad with a 10-4 record.

Their two games with University and East Fairmont were rained out.

They were slated to play a twin bill at Robert C. Byrd Tuesday.

They will return to action today as they visit Liberty in a Big 10 Conference outing.
