Begin sectional play Tuesday after best EHS

TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur girls basketball team recognized all of Upshur County’s youth basketball leagues during Thursday night’s game against Elkins.

The top-ranked Lady Bucs then took care of business on the floor, adding some additional school records during their convincing 71-12 victory over their long-time Big 10 Conference rivals in front of a packed B-UHS gymnasium.

It was a school-best 17th straight victory for head coach Jeremy Maxwell’s squad, which is now 21-1 on the season. B-U will host Preston at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the opening game of the Class AAA, Region 1, Section 2 tournament.

No. 2-seed Morgantown will host No. 3 University in the other half of the section.

The outcome in Thursday’s game was decided early, as the Lady Bucs jumped out to a 34-3 lead after one quarter and led by 53, at 58-5, at halftime.

In just two quarters of work, all-stater Hanna McClung and Lauren Bennett had 17 points apiece for B-U. Fellow senior McKinley Gaudet chipped in with 13.

The Lady Tigers (8-14, 3-13 Big 10), who were limited to just five field goals, were led by Taylor Oldaker’s four points.
