Lady Bucs rally to win thriller against Indians; roll past Liberty

Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc freshman Kenna Maxwell (2) and Gabby Parke (11) apply a double-team to a Bridgeport ball-handler during the fourth quarter of their contest Friday night in Bridgeport. Maxwell had 11 points and Parke two as the Lady Bucs rallied from 15 points down to beat Bridgeport in overtime, 60-58. The Lady Bucs followed that up on Saturday with a win over Liberty to improve to 6-5 on the season.

BRIDGEPORT – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs rallied from 15 down to take an 11-point lead, only to see that evaporate and force an overtime session with the Class AAAA No. 8 Bridgeport Indians last Friday night in Bridgeport.

Fortunately for the Lady Bucs, they were just a little bit better in overtime as Bridgeport missed two of three free throws at the end of the session as Buckhannon-Upshur escaped with a wild 60-58 victory.

The win snapped a five-game slide for the Lady Bucs and gave them plenty of momentum in their road clash Saturday with Liberty, which they easily won by a 61-41 score after leading by a 25-7 score at the end of the first quarter.

Against Bridgeport, the Lady Bucs were down by 15 early in the second quarter by a 24-9 margin.

B-U then began their rally as the rattled off 10 straight points with Shelby McDaniels getting five of them, Kenna Maxwell three and Kendal Currence two.

That brought the Lady Bucs to within five, at 24-19, with 3:03 remaining in the half.

Down 27-19, the Lady Bucs closed the half with a 5-0 run after a putback by McKenzie Reynolds and a three-pointer from McDaniels that make it a 27-24 game.

B-U continued to dominate the Indians opening the second half on a 16-2 run for a 40-29 lead with 3:11 left in the third quarter.

It was Bridgeport’s turn for a run as they ended the quarter outscoring Buckhannon-Upshur by a 10-2 count as they narrowed the B-U lead down two three, at 42-39.

Bridgeport’s Hannah Bartlett started the fourth quarter with a three tying the game at 42-42.

A pair of free throws by McDaniels put the Lady Bucs up 51-49 with 1:51 remaining, but Gabby Reep tied the game with a lay-up.

Bridgeport got two good looks at the basket at the buzzer, having a three-point attempt bounce off the rim and the putback attempt coming up short as the game went into overtime.

The Lady Bucs tried to pull away in the overtime period as a lay-up from Kennedy Samargo put them back up by four, at 55-51, with 2:34 remaining.

The Lady Bucs were up 58-56 when Reep made just one of two at the line with six seconds left making it a 58-57 score.

The Indians quickly fouled Maxwell, and the freshman calmly drained both high-pressure free throws to give the Lady Bucs a 60-57 game with five seconds remaining.

Reep was fouled on her last second three-point shot and had the opportunity at the line to tie the game, but she missed the first two and sank the third one as the buzzer sounded.

“It was huge for us,” exclaimed Kittle “Probably not my best win as a coach but I think definitely my most important.”

The win was the first for the Lady Bucs since they returned last week from their required quarantine.

“With what these girls have been though for them to come out and absolutely play their guts out and refuse to lose that game just shows what kind of heart they have,” said Kittle. “I couldn’t be prouder of them!! They have been absolutely exhausted this last week and a half and really with the runs and change in momentum that kept occurring they could’ve very easily given up, but they fought and fought and found a way to win.”

McDaniels scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Lady Bucs while Maxwell tallied 11.

Reep scored 20 for Bridgeport while Annamarie Pinti had 18.

In Saturday’s follow-up game, the Lady Bucs disposed of Liberty in the first quarter as they never trailed in the contest.

Leading 10-5 early with three minutes gone in the first quarter, the Lady Bucs went on a 15-2 run for a 25-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

A three-pointer by Maxwell gave B-U their biggest lead of the game at 25, at 34-9, with 3:52 left in the half.

With the Lady Bucs up 37-12 after a McDaniels’ three-pointer, Liberty closed the quarter with an 8-0 run making it a 37-20 game at the intermission.

Parke made a baseline jumper and drained a three-pointer and McDaniels knocked down two free throws to start the third quarter and quickly extend the lead back to 24, at 44-20.

Two foul shots by Maxwell left the Lady Bucs up 25 heading into the fourth quarter, at 53-28.
