B-U tumbles to No.1 Parkersburg in IOGA opener in rematch of Class AAA title game

GLENVILLE – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs went 1-1 claiming third place in the 2018 IOGA Classic at Glenville State College last week.

The Lady Bucs opened the Classic with a rematch of the Class AAA title game last season with the Parkersburg Big Reds and dropped a hard-fought 62-47 contest Thursday evening.

They returned on Friday to play Bridgeport in the consolation game and used a huge fourth-quarter rally to get past the Indians by a 54-50 score.

The split left head coach Rob Kittle’s squad with a 3-2 record.

The Lady Bucs grabbed an early lead against Parkersburg after Alli Robinson made a lay-up and free throw and Brooklyn Maxwell downed a free throw to give B-U a 7-5 advantage.

With the Lady Bucs down 9-7, Robinson knocked down a jumper to make it a 9-9 game, but Parkersburg closed the opening quarter on an 8-2 run for a 17-11 lead heading into the second quarter.

Parkersburg opened their lead to 10, at 21-11, but Audrey Gaudet scored two from the paint and Robinson turned in an old-fashioned three-pointer to pull B-U to within four, at 21-17, with three minutes left in the half.

Parkersburg ended the half on a 9-5 run to take a 30-22 lead into the break.

A lay-up by Shelby McDaniels trimmed the B-U deficit to six, at 34-28, with 5:13 showing on the third-quarter clock, but the Big Reds scored nine unanswered to open up a 43-28 advantage.

Maxwell ended the three-minute scoring drought with a three-point play after being fouled on her short jumper to close it to a 43-31 game, but Parkersburg maintained a 15-point lead heading into the third quarter by a 48-33 score.

Parkersburg pushed their fourth-quarter lead to 19, at 62-43, before the Lady Bucs scored the final six points of the game.’

“We battled and never quit,” remarked Kittle. “We got a little tired from their press and let Parkersburg get some easy baskets, but they are a great team. We still have a lot of work to do, but we certainly hope we see them again somewhere down the road. There are a lot of positives that we can take away from this game. I am proud of every single girl on the team. They gave it everything they had.”

Robinson led the Lady Bucs with 18 points while Maxwell chipped in 14.

McDaniels had a team-high five rebounds.

The Lady Bucs contest Friday looked like it was going to belong to Bridgeport after three-quarters of play.

B-U fell behind by an 11-6 score after one quarter getting just three field goals, two from Robinson and one from McKenzie Kittle.

Scoring 10 points in the second quarter, four from Leigh Ann Bennett and Maxwell and two from Robinson, the Lady Bucs trailed Bridgeport by a 24-16 score.

Robinson poured in 11 points in the third quarter and Kittle and Maxwell each added a basket but Bridgeport extended their lead to nine, at 40-31.

Everything changed in the fourth quarter for the Lady Bucs.

The Lady Bucs were down 50-42 midway through the final period but held Bridgeport scoreless the rest of the game.

McDaniels hit a long jumper to make it a 50-44 contest with 3:40 remaining and following a Bridgeport miss, Bennett uncorked one of her four 3-pointers in the quarter to make it a 50-47 contest.

McDaniels had a steal underneath the B-U basket and put it in for a basket making it a 50-49 game.

Bridgeport missed their next shot with Maxwell getting the rebound.

That gave Bennett another chance for a trey at the other end of the court and she buried another one from the top of the key to give the Lady Bucs a 52-50 lead with 35 seconds left. It was B-U’s first lead since they led the game 2-0.

Bridgeport called a time out with nine seconds left, but Bennett had a huge steal from Emily Riggs with seven seconds and the Lady Bucs worked the ball ahead to McDaniels who scored before the buzzer as the Lady Bucs won 54-50.

“Leigh Ann really took the game over in the fourth quarter,” remarked Kittle. “Hitting four treys like that and then coming up the steal was incredible. I thought overall we were tired from playing the night before but the team really found another gear in this fourth quarter. It was a great win, the girls never gave up. I couldn’t be prouder of the effort.”

Robinson scored a game-high 20 points and while Bennett added 16.

Maxwell grabbed seven rounds while Robinson had six.

The Lady Bucs will return to action this Wednesday when they visit North Marion for a 7:30 p.m. Big 10 Conferencecontest.
