TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur girls placed third and the Buccaneer boys fifth in the Big 10 Conference Championships held Saturday at the West Virginia Wesleyan College pool.
Coach Brandon Williams’ B-U squads will return to action at 3 p.m. Saturday for the Region III Championships to also be held at Wesleyan.
The Lady Bucs finished with 163 points. Fairmont Senior won the meet with 247 points, while Bridgeport was second with 230 points.
Madi Shepherd and Jennifer Williams had the top individual finishes for the B-U girls. Shepherd placed second in the 100 freestyle in a time of 59.42 and Williams was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with an effort of 1:19.65.
Shepherd was also a member of the runner-up 200 freestyle team, which also included seniors Brooke Newcome, Ivy Ward and Kailyn Bosley.
The foursome finished with a time of 4:17.67 and also formed the third-place 200 medley relay (2:11.76).
Newcome, meanwhile, posted third-place finishes in the 200 IM (2:35) and 100
The B-U boys had several
Florian Cramer placed fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:53.48) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:26.71), Will Sparks was fifth in both the 100 breaststroke (1:18.32) and 50 freestyle (25.08) and Will Squires placed fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:13.24).

Schools competing in Saturday’s Region III Championships with B-U include Elkins, Grafton, Herbert Hoover, Liberty, Lincoln, Notre Dame, Philip Barbour, PikeView, Riverside, Shady Spring, South Harrison, Robert C. Byrd and Woodrow Wilson.
The top three finishers in each individual event, along with the 12 fastest from the other four regions, qualify for the state meet. The top two relay teams (and 10 fastest from the other regions) also advance.
The state meet will be held Feb. 15-16 at the WVU Natatorium.
