Lady Bucs overcome rugged start to take down Minutemaids, 55-38

WESTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs used an 18-2 second-half run to put away the Lewis County Minutemaids by a 55-38 score Thursday night in their Big 10 Conference clash at Lewis County High School.

Prior to the run, the Lady Bucs were nursing a 27-24 lead with 4:40 left in the third quarter.

The stretch allowed the Lady Bucs to open up a 19-point fourth-quarter lead as they cruised the rest of the way to the win.

“We switched up our defenses some, starting making our shots and did a better job of executing,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle about the 18-2 run.

The run also helped cover up a woeful six minutes of Buckhannon-Upshur play to start the game.

The Bucs found themselves down by an 8-2 score after six minutes of action as they turned the ball all over seven times during that stretch and were not even able to get a shot off during the first three minutes of the contest.

“We came out flat and weren’t ready to play,” noted Kittle. “But we never give up and kept working hard. We have been in a enough games, close games, to not get flustered when things don’t go our way.”

They picked it up in the final 90 seconds of the opening quarter as Shelby McDaniels made a jumper in the paint and Kendall Currence put in a rebound as they Lady Bucs were only down by two despite their start, at 8-6.

B-U began to take control of the game at the start of the second quarter.

Brooklyn Maxwell came out and hit a three-pointer to give the Lady Bucs their first lead, at 9-8, and after a Lewis County basket, McDaniels uncorked a trey, Currence scored a jumper in the paint and Kiara Woods put in a free throw to treat Buckhannon-Upshur to a 15-10 lead.

It was a lead they would never give back to the Minutemaids.

Lewis County trimmed it to 17-14, but Kennedy Samargo put in a lay-up and McDaniels scored underneath to give the Lady Bucs a 21-14 lead.

Emma Cayton sank two free throws for Lewis County to wrap up the second-quarter scoring as B-U took a 21-16 lead into the break.

McKenzie Reynolds had six of the first eight third-quarter points as the Lady Bucs took a 27-19 lead.

Payton Campbell shot the Minutemaids back into the game with a pair of three pointers making it a 27-24 contest.

That is when the Lady Bucs went on their 18-2 run.

Maxwell and McDaniels each hit three pointers to get the run started and Kassidy Wilfong scored on a put back and Lexi Kelley scored on a lay-up to treat the Lady Bucs to a 39-24 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Lewis County scored a basket to start the fourth quarter, but Woods knocked down two free throws to keep the run going, McDaniels scored a lay-up and Samargo broke free for a lay-up giving the Lady Bucs their 19-point lead, at 45-26, with 5:20 left in the contest.

Lewis County cut the lead down to 15 with 41 seconds remaining as the rest of the game was basically played at the free-throw line.

Kelley put in a pair of free throws for the Lady Bucs with 21 seconds remaining to wrap up the scoring.

McDaniels led the Lady Bucs in the scoring column with 16 points while Reynolds and Currence each added eight.

The Lady Bucs shot 38.7 percent from the floor making good on 19 of their 49 shots.

Lewis County was led by Payton Campbell who scored 18 points.

The Buckhannon-Upshur defense limited Lewis County to just a 25 percent shooting night as they made 10 of their 40 field goal attempts.

The Minutemaids dropped to 10-8 overall.

The Lady Bucs, now winners of six of their last seven, improved to 12-6 on the season and 10-3 in the Big 10 Conference.

Buckhannon-Upshur will return to action Monday when they visit South Charleston for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
