Lady Bucs listless in 23-point romp against overmatched Robert C. Byrd

McKenzie Reynolds (3) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs puts up a one-handed shot in front of Robert C. Byrd’s Avery Childers (42) during the first quarter of their Big 10 Conference clash Thursday night at the high school. Reynolds had eight points and three rebounds as the Lady Bucs cruised past the Lady Eagles by a 55-32 score.

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs had little trouble putting away the less-talented Robert C. Byrd Lady Eagles in a 55-32 home win Thursday night at the high school gym.

But it wasn’t the type of game that head coach Rob Kittle was looking for from his Lady Bucs as they appeared to go through the motions against the three-win Lady Eagles.

It was a disappointing performance from Kittle’s perspective after the Lady Bucs played one of their best halves of the year on Tuesday in the second half of their contest with East Fairmont.

“It was a rather uninspiring win to say the least,” remarked Kittle. “We didn’t come out with the energy we needed to. Nothing against Robert C. Byrd, but we have to quit playing down to our opponent. We came out and played rather uninspired and didn’t play with the fire that we needed to. It was discouraging to not to carry over the momentum from the East Fairmont game. In the second half against East Fairmont, I thought we played one of our better halves of the season. Then we come out and go through the motions against Robert C. Byrd.”

Buckhannon-Upshur and Robert C. Byrd battled to a 9-9 deadlock after one quarter of action.

The Lady Bucs used a 16-3 run to start the second quarter and put the game away.

Brooklyn Maxwell started the quarter on fire with seven straight points, including a three-pointer, and McKenzie Reynolds scored on a lay-up to up the B-U lead to nine, at 18-9, with three minutes gone in the quarter.

Birkely Richards interrupted the B-U run with a three-pointer for Robert C. Byrd, but the Lady Bucs started another run with seven  unanswered points.

Kennedy Samargo popped in a short jumper, Kendall Currence put in a rebound and Maxwell scored an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Lady Bucs a 25-12 lead with 2:19 left in the half.

The Lady Bucs took a 27-14 lead with them into the break.

Kassidy Wilfong put in a lay-up, Shelby McDaniels canned a baseline jumper and Reynolds scored with a leaner in the paint to start the third quarter for the Lady Bucs and up their lead to 19, at 33-14.

Robert C. Byrd went on a 9-4 run to end the quarter, cutting the B-U deficit to 13, at 36-23 heading into the final stanza.

Currence scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to increase the B-U lead to 17, at 40-23.

Leading by a 42-26 score, McDaniels knocked down two free throws and scored on a lay-up to put the Lady Bucs back up by 20, at 46-26, with 4:13 remaining.

The Lady Bucs ended the game on a 9-6 run.

McDaniels led the Lady Bucs with 12 points while Maxwell added 11 and Currence 10.

Maxwell just missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds while Wilfong pulled down eight.

The Lady Bucs played almost turnover free basketball with just six turnovers in the 32 minutes of action.

Richards led Robert C. Byrd with 10 points while Avery Childers had seven points.

Robert C. Byrd dropped to 3-11 overall and 1-10 in the Big 10 Conference.

Buckhannon-Upshur improved to 8-5 overall and 7-3 in the Big 10 Conference.

They will return to action today as they visit John Marshall for a non-conference clash at 7 p.m.

“If we show the same energy against John Marshall as we did tonight, we are going to lose. It’s that simple,” concluded Kittle.

Next week, the Lady Bucs will visit University on Tuesday in a key sectional match-up and then return home Thursday to face Philip Barbour.

Both games are set for 7:30 p.m.
