Lady Bucs have no trouble putting away Grafton, 83-35

Shelby McDaniels (1) drives hard to the basket past a Grafton defender during the third quarter of their contest Wednesday night at the high school. McDaniels had a game-high 24 points as the Lady Bucs downed Grafton, 83-35.

TENNERTON – Shelby McDaniels scored a game-high 24 points and Gabby Parke added 23 points as the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs rolled past the overmatched Grafton Bearcats by an 83-35 decision Wednesday night at the high school gym.

The game was decided early on as the Lady Bucs raced out to a 10-0 lead after three minutes of action and led 23-6 after one quarter and 50-17 after two quarters of action.

“Our message before the game was to come out and dominate early,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle. “We knew if we came out and played the way we are capable of, that we could control tempo and do the things we needed to do. We focused on improving some of the aspects of the game we needed to work on.”

Parke started the game with a trey, Kendal Currence made a jumper, McDaniels unleashed a three-pointer and Kennedy Samargo made a lay-up to give the Lady Bucs their 10-0 lead.

With the Lady Bucs still holding an 11-point lead, at 17-6, they closed the quarter on a 6-0 run behind two free throws by McDaniels, a lay-up from Parke and an inside basket from Currence as they took a 23-6 lead into the second quarter.

Currence started the second quarter with a lay-up, Parke turned in an old-fashioned three-point play and McDaniels popped in another three for an 8-0 run and a 31-6 lead.

Up 34-10, the Lady Bucs went on another 8-0 run for a 42-10 advantage with four minutes left in the half.

Rosie Shackleford closed out the half with a lay-up giving the Lady Bucs a 50-17 lead at the intermission.

Kiara Woods opened the third quarter with a free throw and McDaniels scored B-U’s next 10 points before ending her night as the Lady Bucs built their lead to 40, at 61-21.

Kenna Maxwell ended the third-quarter with a lay-up as B-U headed into the final quarter up 65-25.

B-U scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter, with Parke scoring 10 and Olivia Ellis two, as they owned a 77-25 advantage with 5:12 left to play.

Grafton closed out the game on a 10-6 run.

The easy win allowed Kittle to get his younger players some extra time at the varsity level.

Kittle said about his three freshmen on the varsity roster, “Parke shot the ball well, Maxwell played great, and we were able to get Rosie Shackleford some minutes. Getting them some more varsity experience in a competitive environment is huge for us.”

Grafton was led by Eva Jones and Kambree Delaney, both who had 11 points.

Trailing McDaniels and Parke in the scoring column for B-U were Currence with 10 points and Maxwell with nine.

The Lady Bucs, now 4-0 on the season, will get their biggest test of the year as they visit Class AAAA No. 1 Wheeling Park today at 5 p.m.

“This is a huge game for us,” concluded Kittle. “They are the number one team in the state. If anybody is going to believe in us outside of this locker room, we have to go up there and make a good showing and take care of business. The girls are excited for this opportunity.”
