Lady Bucs go scoreless in first quarter in upset loss to Philip Barbour, 60-49

PHILIPPI – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs still remain out of sorts since returning to the court from their quarantine lay-off.

The Lady Bucs visited Philip Barbour Wednesday night and lost a 60-49 decision.

This was the same Philip Barbour team they easily handled in a dominating 67-43 win just a little over three weeks ago.

Buckhannon-Upshur didn’t score in the first quarter, falling behind by a 12-0 count.

The Lady Bucs were down 15-0 before Shelby McDaniels knocked down a trey 35 seconds into the second quarter.

Following a Philip Barbour free throw, Gabby Parke scored on a putback and McKenzie Reynolds scored underneath to make it a 16-7 game with 5:19 left in the second quarter.

Alyssa Hill scored a basket for Philip Barbour, but Kenna Maxwell scored from the paint, McDaniels went inside for a lay-up and Kennedy Samargo hit a jumper to pull the Lady Bucs to within five, at 18-13.

Philip Barbour scored five unanswered points to push their lead back to 10, at 23-13, but Parke answered with a three-pointer.

Hill scored again for Philip Barbour, but Reynolds made a lay-up and Parke put in a free throw to get the Lady Bucs to within six at the half, at 25-19.

B-U saw their deficit go right back to 10 points as the Colts scored the first four points of the third quarter.

The Lady Bucs answered with a three-pointer from Parke and McDaniels scored on a lay-up making it just a five-point game, at 29-24.

It was the closest the Lady Bucs could get to the Colts as they responded with a 6-0 run putting their lead at 11, at 35-24, with 2:34 left in the third quarter.

Kendal Currence ended the run with a jumper for the Lady Bucs, but Philip Barbour ended the quarter on a 7-4 run for a 42-30 advantage heading into the final canto.

A 7-2 run to start the fourth quarter all but evaporated the Lady Bucs hopes as they trailed by a 17, at 49-32, their biggest deficit of the game.

A jumper by Reynolds got the Colt lead down to 11, at 52-41, with 1:49 remaining, but the Colts scored consecutive baskets to take the lead back to 15, at 56-41, with 1:14 left.

B-U ended the game on an 8-4 run.

McDaniels scored a game-high 20 points for the Lady Bucs while Parke added nine.

Hill led Philip Barbour with 14 points while Braylyn Sparks and Emily Denison each tacked on 13.

Philip Barbour improved to 6-7 on the season.

The Lady Bucs lost their fifth in a row and dropped to 4-5 on the year.

They were slated to visit Bridgeport Friday night.

They will return to the court Tuesday hosting Lewis County at 7:30 p.m.
