Lady Bucs get huge soccer win against Wheeling Park

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc soccer team picked up a huge non-conference victory against the Wheeling Park Patriots here Saturday afternoon on the turf at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.

The Lady Bucs won a 2-1 decision.

“We really wanted this game,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jackie Zuliani. “We felt this game slipped away from us last year. Wheeling Park is a very good, physical team. We knew we had to work the ball and increase our time of possession if we wanted to get ahead of them.”

Lauren Gompers gave B-U a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when she took a free kick from midfield that went over the Wheeling Park keeper’s head for the score.

Kennedy Samargo had the assist on the goal.

The 1-0 score would hold at the intermission.

Maggie Nolte gave the Lady Bucs some breathing room in the 63rd minute.

She scored a goal to the lower left of the net with the assist going to Madison Ware.

Mia Zecca put in an unassisted goal for Wheeling Park in the 66th minute but the Lady Bucs made their 2-1 advantage stand the rest of the game.

“I think fatigue set in late in the second half and we got sloppy during that time, but overall, we did a great job and stuck to our game plan,” Zuliani said. “We still need to clean-up some little things, but overall we did a great job containing them and making them take shots they didn’t really want to take. Our defense played very well. Audrey Gaudet really controlled the center and shut them down with the help of Samargo. Out outside backs did a great job also and our overall defensive speed really disrupted their attack. Freshmen Kiera Arbogast did a nice job subbing in defensively. Her speed and athleticism fit right in with our defensive line.

“Offensively, we moved the ball pretty well most of the game, but often held onto the ball too long, limiting our shots. The score could have been a few more in our favor if we passed more in our attacking third. We also missed a penalty kick that should have been another goal.”

Buckhannon-Upshur had five shots-on-goal while Wheeling Park had four.

Corner kicks were even at 3-3.

B-U keeper Claire Coffman and counterpart Deanna Crumm for Wheeling Park each had three saves.

Wheeling Park dropped to 7-3-1 on the season.

The Lady Bucs improved to 7-2 overall.

“Everyone who played did a great job and played hard,” concluded Zuliani. “This was a total team effort and everyone contributed. I am very proud of these girls and how they worked together to get this win.”

They will host Fairmont Senior Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and then remain home Thursday for an outing against East Fairmont at 7:30 p.m.
