Lady Bucs get back into win column with overtime victory against Lincoln

SHINNSTON – Playing for the first time in two weeks, the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc basketball team earned a much needed win against the Lincoln Cougars last Saturday in overtime by a 48-45 score.

With the postponement of the Parkersburg South contest on Dec. 20, the Lady Bucs went two full weeks between games and entered the contest with the Cougars on a two-game slide.

The Lady Bucs managed just seven points in the first quarter, four from Brooklyn Maxwell, two from Lexi Kelley and one from Shelby McDaniels and trailed by a 10-7 margin going into the second quarter.

The Lady Bucs picked up the pace in the second quarter outscoring Lincoln by a 16-10 margin.

McDaniels put in five points, Maxwell three, and Kendal Currence, Kiara Woods, Kennedy Samargo and Kassidy Wilfong two each.

That gave the Lady Bucs a 23-20 lead.

B-U won the third quarter by a 15-13 margin with McDaniels scoring five points, Currence four and Kelley, Maxwell and Woods two each.

They took a 38-33 lead into the final quarter.

Lincoln scored the first five points of the final quarter as Emily Jett scored on a layup, Hannah Ferris made a free throw, and Allison Rockwell knocked down a jumper to make it a 38-38 contest.

McDaniels answered with a trey for the Lady Bucs to put them back ahead of three, at 41-38.

The two teams traded the lead back and forth in the final minutes of the game as the game ended at the end of regulation at 45-45.

Currence took a pass from McDaniels and scored to break the deadlock and give the lead back to B-U, at 47-45, in the overtime period.

McDaniels added a free throw to make it 48-45 as the Lady Buc defense held Lincoln scoreless in the overtime period for the three-point win.

Lincoln dropped to 3-2 on the season.

Victoria Sturm led Lincoln with 17 points.

Ferris tacked on 13 points while Rockwell provided nine points.

The Lady Bucs improved to 3-2 on the season.

B-U was led by McDaniels who had 18 points and Maxwell who tallied nine.

Currence added eight while Kelley chipped in five.

The Lady Bucs were slated to play Weir Thursday evening and will return to the court Tuesday at home against North Marion.

That game will tip at 7:30 p.m.

Following that contest, the Lady Bucs will visit Grafton on Thursday, Jan. 9 and return home on Monday, Jan. 13 when they host Morgantown.
