Lady Bucs earn big win against Mohigans; outplayed Ripley but settles for a 2-2 tie

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc soccer team scored a huge home win Thursday against the Morgantown Mohigans at Ted Crites Alumni Field at Tom Hasbrouck Stadium.

The Lady Bucs defeated their sectional rival by a 3-2 score.

Buckhannon-Upshur followed that up with a 2-2 tie at home with Ripley Saturday afternoon.

The action left head coach Jackie Zuliani’s team with a 2-0-1 record.

The Lady Bucs built a 3-0 lead at the half against Morgantown.

Catherine Oliveto staked the Lady Bucs to a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute with the assist going to Cameron Zuliani.

Laikelyn Leggett played a corner from Maggie Queen and found the back of the net in the 15th minute to make it a 2-0 lead for Buckhannon-Upshur.

Lexi Kelley put in a rebound after a shot by Zuliani to increase the B-U lead to 3-0 in the 28th minute.

Anna Rose Iquinto put Morgantown on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute to make it a 3-1 contest.

Morgantown’s Samantha Brown scored on a penalty kick to close the gap to 3-2 but the Lady Bucs held on the rest of the way for the win.

Buckhannon-Upshur held a 7-6 lead in shots-on-goal and a 6-3 margin in corner kicks.

Buckhannon-Upshur was called offsides just once, while Morgantown was whistled for seven.

Claire Coffman made six saves in net for the Lady Bucs, while Jessica Jones stopped three shots for Morgantown.

Buckhannon-Upshur dominated much of the action in the first half but still found themselves down by a 2-0 score midway through the opening half.

Sydni Cunningham was able to float a 35-yarder over Coffman’s outstretched hands for Ripley’s first goal.

Ten minutes later, Zoe Casto took a shot from outside of the box to the right side for Ripley making it a 2-0 game.

The Lady Bucs cut the lead in half with 12 minutes remaining in the first when Gracie Boyles scored on a free kick from 20 yards out.

That made it a 2-1 game before Zuliani tied it up for the Lady Bucs with two seconds left in the first half.

She ran onto a ball on the left side and punched it home deadlocking the score at 2-2.

Neither team found the net in the second half.

In a stat that shows how much the Lady Bucs dominated, they owned a 21-8 lead in shots-on-goal.

Coffman made six saves in net for the Lady Bucs.

In a schedule change, the Lady Bucs will now play North Marion at home this Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. That game was originally scheduled for Sept. 12.

They visit Lincoln on Thursday at 6 p.m.
