Lady Bucs drop contests to University and North Marion

TENNERTON – The brutal stretch of games continued for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs last week as they played a very good University Hawk team at home Friday and the top team in Class AA on the road Wednesday in the North Marion Lady Huskies in a Big 10 Conference battle.

The Lady Bucs lost to University by a 61-52 score and dropped a 68-50 decision to North Marion.

The two losses left head coach Rob Kittle’s squad with a 3-4 record overall and 2-1 record in the Big 10.

Against University, the Lady Bucs simply couldn’t get some good looks to fall, hitting on just 40 percent of their shots.

“I have never seen us shoot this poorly before,” remarked Kittle. “We got most of what we wanted on the offensive end, we just couldn’t make any shots.”

With the Lady Bucs down 5-3, Leigh Ann Bennett made a jumper and Alli Robinson knocked down a free throw to give B-U a 6-5 lead with 2:10 left in the first-quarter.

It was the only lead the Lady Bucs would have until the fourth quarter.

University closed the quarter on a 5-0 run for a 10-6 lead after the first period of action.

Robinson started the fourth quarter with a free throw and Audrey Gaduet scored an old-fashioned three-pointer that tied the game at 10-10, but University went on a 10-3 jaunt for a 20-13 advantage with 2:54 left in the half.

They maintained that seven-point lead at the break, at 27-20.

The Hawks scored the first basket of the second half for a nine-point lead but Gaudet popped in a short jumper, Shelby McDaniels went inside for two points and Gaudet came back with a lay-up to bring the Lady Bucs to within three, at 29-26 with 1:29 gone in the third quarter.

University still maintained a three-point lead at 33-30, but Robinson put in a free throw and Gaudet a lay-up to deadlock the game at 33-33 with 4:03 left in the third.

The Hawks went on a 7-2 run to open up a 40-35 advantage but the Lady Bucs ended the half on a free throw by Robinson and a put back by Brooklyn Maxwell to make it a 40-38 game heading into the final quarter of action.

A Robinson baseline 3-pointer gave the Lady Bucs their first lead since the first quarter, at 45-44, with 5:07 left in the game.

After University’s Ashton Boggs and Maxwell traded baskets, Zoe Murphy nailed a 3-pointer for UHS, but McDaniels hit a 10-footer to keep the game tied at 49-49 with 3:24 left.

The game went south for the Lady Bucs at this point.

The Hawk defense held the Lady Bucs without a field goal over the next three minutes as they went on a 12-1 run during the home stretch to take a 61-50 lead.

Maxwell ended the game with a basket for the final score.

“We just didn’t execute in those final three minutes,” Kittle stated. “We lost some energy and University made plays and we didn’t.”

Robinson just missed out on a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Gaudet added 11 points while Maxwell added eight.

Against North Marion, the game couldn’t have started out better as the Lady Bucs took a 15-8 lead with Maxwell lighting up the scoreboard with eight points while Robinson put in four points and McKenzie Kittle hitting a trey.

With North Marion’s depth wearing down the Lady Bucs, the Huskies took the second quarter by a 24-10 margin for a 32-25 lead.

Maxwell had four points in the quarter while Gaudet and Bennett each had two and Kittle and Robinson had one apiece.

North Marion scored the first points of the second half on a Hannah Shriver basket but Gaudet countered with a bucket to make it 34-27 game.

North Marion went on to outscore the Lady Bucs by an 11-6 margin for a 45-33 advantage heading into the final quarter.

North Marion won the final quarter by a 23-17 margin.

Maxwell scored a team-high 14 points while Robinson had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Bucs will return to action Friday when they host Brooke at 7:30 p.m. in the Buckhannon-Upshur Holiday Classic.

They will play either Spring Mills or Spring Valley Saturday.
