Lady Bucs drop close battle to University

TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School Lady Bucs volleyball team played host to the University Lady Hawks Tuesday night. The Lady Bucs were looking to build off a strong showing over the weekend in the 4th Annual Buckhannon Spooktacular Volleyball Tournament.

B-UHS started the game hot, building a slight lead over University in the early stages of the first set. University responded with a run of their own. After trading the lead for the majority of a very competitive first set, University eventually took the 22-25 victory.

In the second set, the Lady Bucs kept the game close, but couldn’t seem to wrestle the lead away from the Lady Hawks. A run sparked by a key timeout from Coach Ashley Stanton chipped away University’s lead, but it fell just slightly short as the Lady Bucs dropped the second set, 20-25.

The start of the third set mirrored the beginning of the first set in that the Lady Bucs came out firing on all cylinders. They built a comfortable lead early, but saw University come storming back with a run of their own. In the end, after another very close set, the Lady Bucs lost 21-25.

Despite this loss to University, the veteran Lady Bucs team seemed poised to be a tough matchup for in-sectional play, regardless of the matchup they draw. If a handful of plays had went the other way Tuesday night, the Lady Bucs could have beaten University. Their very competitive showing against University, along with the senior leadership on their roster should bode well for the Lady Bucs’ confidence as they enter the final stretch of the season.

With the cancellation of Thursday night’s game against East Fairmont, the showdown with University will be the Lady Bucs last regular game of the season. The Lady Bucs finish the season with a record of 7-10-2.

The Lady Bucs will now shift their focus on starting to prepare for sectional tournament play, which begins Tuesday, November 2. The sectional tournament will be hosted by Preston County, who will welcome the Lady Bucs, alongside Bridgeport and University. The sectional champion will then advance to regionals.
