Lady Bucs double up Grafton in 60-30 victory

Freshman Shelby McDaniels (1) gets the feet tied up of a Grafton defender as she drives towards the basket during their Big 10 Conference outing Friday night. McDaniels scored a game-high 19 points as the Lady Bucs beat Grafton, 60-30.

TENNERTON – It is hard to argue with the success of a 30-point win, but for Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc head coach Rob Kittle this isn’t a game he is going to remember fondly looking back on at season’s end.

The Lady Bucs doubled up the Grafton Lady Bearcats by a 60-30 score here Friday night in Big 10 Conference action, but the first 12 minutes of the game were not up to Kittle’s or the Lady Bucs usual standards.

The Lady Bucs,  who didn’t score in the first five minutes of the game, trailed the two-win Lady Bearcats by a 10-7 score after one quarter and didn’t take their first lead against their outmanned opponents until 48 seconds into the second quarter.

“That was not a very good 12-minute stretch of basketball,” remarked Kittle “We didn’t have any energy or excitement during that time. We were hanging our heads when we missed shots as well. It’s just something we can’t do as a team.”

To their credit, the Lady Bucs did a complete 180 in the second half and stuffed the Lady Bearcats as expected outscoring them by a 35-12 margin and limiting them to just four second-half field goals.

Kittle said the difference in the levels of play between halves was the determination of his team to be better.

“It was our energy and excitement,” Kittle explained. “When we play with those two qualities, we are a very difficult team to beat, but when he come out like we did against Grafton we are very average.”

The Lady Bucs found themselves down by a 6-0 score and wouldn’t score their first points of the game until the 2:36 mark of the opening quarter when McKenzie Kittle unleashed a 3-pointer.

Kassidy Wilfong and Shelby McDaniels each added a field goal in the final two minutes of the quarter for the Lady Bucs as they trailed by a 10-7 scoring going into the second period.

McDaniels provided a spark for the Lady Bucs scoring the first four points of the second quarter to give the Lady Bucs their first lead, at 11-10, but Grafton scored the next four to retake the lead at 14-11 with 5:56 left in the half.

The Lady Bucs finally got the offense going with an 8-0 run behind Audrey Gaudet scoring a lay-up, McDaniels hitting two free throws and Leigh Ann Bennett uncorking a trey.

That gave Buckhannon-Upshur a 19-14 advantage with 1:57 remaining in the half.

Grafton scored two straight baskets to make it a 19-18 game, but Bennett and Alli Robinson both unleashed 3-pointers in the final 40 seconds of the half as they treated B-U to a 25-18 lead at the break.

McDaniels set the tone for the second half coming out and hitting a 3-pointer, and after a basket by Grafton, McDaniels came back with another three as the Lady Bucs opened a commanding 31-20 lead.

“McDaniels really stepped up and set the tone for a team that wasn’t playing well,” Kittle said. “Her play and enthusiasm carried over to the rest of the team. She really shot the ball well, especially in the second half, and was aggressive on defense. I am really proud of her game.”

A lay-up by Gaudet at the third-quarter buzzer stretched the B-U lead to 17, at 40-23.

Buckhannon-Upshur completely dominated the fourth quarter with a 20-2 run.

During the run, Kittle got hot from the right baseline scoring seven points while McDaniels tacked on six points with a pair of treys, Alayna Nesbitt three and Robinson and Gaudet two each.

Grafton ended the game on a 5-0 run to make the final score a little more respectable.

McDaniels scored a game-high 19 points while Kittle was the other Lady Buc in double digits with 11.

The Lady Bucs shot the ball better from the outside then inside the arc.

They were 11-for-26 for 42.3 percent behind the three-point arc and just 11-for-38 inside the arc for 28.9 percent.

Grafton was led by Meridith Maier and Bria Jacobs who each scored eight points.

Grafton dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the Big 10 Conference.

The Lady Bucs improved to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the Big 10 Conference.

Buckhannon-Upshur will return to action today as they host Liberty in a Big 10 Conference game at 7:30 p.m.
