Lady Bucs Cross Country takes third in season opener

MORGANTOWN — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School Lady Buccaneers cross country team got their season off to a nice start during their debut last Tuesday, August 23 at the University Warm-Up, as they garnered a third-place finish among the four-full teams with 49 points. Morgantown picked up the win in the meet with a team score of 36, with University earning runner-up honors with a team score of 43. East Fairmont finished in a distant fourth, last among the teams that fielded a full roster, with a score of 86. Brooke, Clay Battelle, Doddridge County and Frankfort did not field complete teams, but filled out the rest of the field.  

Doddridge County’s Alexis Lamb took home the win in the event, finishing with a time of 18:30.9 with Morgantown’s Madeline Gump took runner-up honors, with a time of 19:06.7. The Lady Buccaneers were led by senior transfer Lydia Falkenstein, who secured a team-high time of 19:24.3 to capture third place overall in the individual competition. Sophomore Samantha Shreve also enjoyed a strong day, finishing seventh with a time of 20:26.8. B-UHS Cross Country Head Coach Taylor Stacy’s team also saw strong days from a trio of juniors in Mia Sappey, Miah Reger, and Brianna Dalton, all who finished inside the top twenty-five. Sappey narrowly missed out on a top ten finish, crossing the finish line in thirteenth place with a time of 21:49.5, with Reger not far behind in sixteenth with a time of 22:53.9, while Dalton rounded out the scoring group of Lady Buccaneers, taking twenty-first with a time of 23:44.9. 

Sophomores Pressley Bowers and Kaydence Monti joined senior Malia Bowers in rounding out the list of competing Lady Bucs, with all finishing inside the top 50. Pressley Bowers, led the group, earning a thirty-seventh place finish with a time of 26:03.1, with Monti not far behind finishing thirty-ninth with a time of 26:42.7, while Malia Bowers rounded out the field of Lady Bucs with a forty-sixth place finish, finishing in 31:07.7.
