MORGANTOWN – It was unfortunate that for the biggest game of the year, the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs came into at less than full strength in their sectional opener on the road against the University Hawks Tuesday night.
The Lady Bucs’ top two scorers, Shelby McDaniels and Brooklyn Maxwell were battling some illnesses and they were out the services of freshman Kendall Currence who rolled an ankle in Monday’s practice.
The Lady Bucs saw their season come to an end with a 43-34 setback.
Despite the adversities coming into the game, the Lady Bucs played a strong first half and led University by a 25-18 score.
The Lady Bucs went ice cold though in the third quarter with just one field goal and trailed by a 31-28 score.
They were never able to recover in the final quarter dropping the game by nine.
In a slow-moving first quarter, game was sloppy early on with both teams turning the ball over on several possession.
The game was tied at 2-2 after three minutes of action before Brooklyn Maxwell made two free throws, McKenzie Reynolds made a jumper and Kennedy Samargo put in a lay-up to give the Lady Bucs an 8-2 lead with 3:48 left in the opening quarter.
The Lady Bucs failed to score the rest of the quarter and University only managed one basket during that time as Buckhannon-Upshur owned an 8-4 lead after eight minutes of action.
University started the second quarter on an 8-2 run over the first three minutes of play as they took a 12-10 advantage.
The Lady Bucs answered with a 7-0 run behind Maxwell unleashing a three-pointer, Kassidy Wilfong grabbing a rebound and putting it back in and Maxwell coming back with two foul shots that gave B-U as 17-12 lead with 3:40 left in the half.
Ashten Boggs put in a jumper for University but Maxwell responded with another trey giving the Lady Bucs a 20-14 advantage with 90 seconds remaining.
Reynolds closed out the half with a three-pointer as the Lady Bucs took a 25-18 lead going into the intermission.
The game turned in the third quarter as the Lady Bucs went scoreless over the first six minute of action.
University went on a 9-0 run during this period and took a 27-25 lead.
Maxwell stopped the run with her third three pointer of the game as the Lady Bucs retook the lead, at 28-27, with two minutes left in the quarter.
It was the only field goal the Lady Bucs made in the quarter as University ended the canto with consecutive baskets for a 31-28 lead heading into the final quarter.
Reynolds put in a jumper in the paint to close the gap to one point, at 31-30, to start the quarter, but the Lady Bucs could never get any closer.
The Hawks went on an 8-0 run over the next four minutes for a 39-30 advantage with 3:48 left to play.
Samargo put an end to the run with a free throw, but University scored the next four points for a 43-31 lead with a minute remaining.
Maxwell put in her third three-pointer of the game to wrap up the scoring with 20 seconds remaining
Maxwell led the Lady Bucs with 13 points while Reynolds put in 11.
The Lady Bucs were guilty of 24 turnovers.
Ashton Boggs scored a game-high 16 points for University while Emily Sharkey scored 12.
University improved to 16-7 and will face Morgantown today for the sectional crown.
Morgantown defeated Preston on the other side of the bracket by a 51-43 score.
The Lady Bucs ended their season with a 13-10 mark.
