RACHEL — The Buckhannon-Upshur volleyball team claimed a straight-set victory over North Marion on Thursday evening.
The Lady Bucs won by scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-13 in raising their record to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in Big 10 Conference games.
“In the first set we started out strong, making smart plays as a whole,” said B-U coach Sheena Westfall. “We were controlled in our passing and getting good hits. In the second set we came out gaining momentum and ended up having a delay in the game due to some line-up issues with North Marion. This changed the momentum and we started to struggle a little. The girls were able to regroup and pick themselves up to finish with the win.
“We had a few hiccups but were able to fight through and finish strong.”
Senior Sydney Maxwell tallied nine kills to lead the Lady Bucs. Freshman McKenzie Reynolds added five kills, two blocks and six digs, Payton Kotol contributed four kills, 11 digs, 15 made serves and three aces, Madison Shepherd tallied three kills, 10 digs and a team-high 16 made serves, Abigail Vincent finished with a pair of kills, 11 made serves and seven aces, Autumn Hatfield had 10 digs, 11 made serves and four aces and Cara Benson led in assists with 24, while adding 13 made serves.
“Abigail Vincent was a big contributer in her serving,” Westfall said. “Sydney Maxwell and McKenzie Reynolds continued to be dominant at the net and Madison Shepherd and Payton Kotol continued to make plays defensively and offensively.
“Overall, I was pleased with the performances of all the girls.”
B-U has a busy week on tap as it travels to John Marshall today for a triangular with Brooke, followed by a home match with Liberty on Tuesday and a home triangular match with Robert C. Byrd and Morgantown on Thursday.
The Lady Bucs will conclude the week at the Greenbrier East Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
