Lady Buc softball team gets split with East Fairmont, Fairmont Senior

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc softball team split a pair of games with Marion County teams earlier this week.

The Lady Bucs dropped a home outing to East Fairmont on Monday by a 16-6 score but came back Wednesday to defeat Fairmont Senior by a 5-4 score.

Their games on Tuesday with Robert C. Byrd and Lincoln on Friday were canceled. Robert C. Byrd was in quarantine and Friday’s game was wiped out by the weather.

In Monday’s game, the two teams combined for 28 hits (East Fairmont 15 and B-U 13) but the Lady Bucs were their own worst enemy with five errors.

Just four of the 16 East Fairmont runs were earned.

The Bees came out of the gate quickly with a seven-run first inning.

The Lady Bucs got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when McKinley Bonnett drew a walk and scored on Hayden Peters’ double to right field making it a 7-1 game.

East Fairmont added a run in the top of the fourth inning and two more in the top of the fifth for a 10-1 lead.

The Lady Bucs sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring four runs, trimming the deficit to 10-5, but East Fairmont scored six more in top of the sixth for a 16-5 advantage.

Shelby McDaniels hit a single and scored on Peters’ single to wrap up the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Peters led the offense with four hits and three RBIs while McDaniels, Robin Ball and Megan Bailey each had two hits.

Jansen Kimble suffered the loss as she gave up just four earned runs and struck out four.

In Wednesday’s game, the Lady Bucs trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the first.

They tied the game with a run in their half of the inning when McDaniels hit a solo home run to right field.

Fairmont Senior recaptured the lead in the top of the second with a run, but Peters made it a 2-2 game when she singled to center and later scored in the Lady Buc half of the second inning.

B-U took their first lead in the bottom of the third when Brooklyn Robinson reached on an error and scored on a bases loaded walk to Brooklyn Bryant.

The Lady Bucs made it a 4-2 game in the bottom of the fifth when Kimble doubled to left field, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a double steal.

Fairmont Senior closed it to 4-3 with a run in the top of the sixth but the Lady Bucs got that run right back when Bailey reached on an error and raced home on Ball’s double to right field.

Fairmont Senior added one more in the of the seventh, but Kimble left runners stranded at first and second to preserve the win.

The Lady Bucs collected six hits with Ball leading the charge with three.

Kimble tossed the entire game to improve her mark to 3-2.

She gave up two earned runs on nine hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out two.

The split left Levi Bender’s club with a 3-3 record.

They will return to action Monday at Philip Barbour for a 5 p.m. start and then stay on the road Tuesday at Bridgeport for another 5 p.m. start.
