Lady Buc netters open season with some near misses

BUCKHANNON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc tennis team is off to an 0-3 start to the season but they easily could be a 2-1 squad with a few breaks going their way.

Two of their losses were by a single match, losing their opener to Elkins by a 4-3 score and to John Marshall by that same 4-3 score.

Their other setback was a 6-1 loss to University.

Against Elkins in their opener, Johnna Smith earned the lone individual win at No. 2.

The Lady Bucs recorded a pair of wins in doubles as Smith and Caitlyn Wendling won at No. 2 and Kayla Hurst and Iris Tenney won at No. 3.

Against University, Hurt and Tenney picked up the lone B-U win at No. 3 doubles.

At John Marshall, Smith and Wendling won at No. 2 and No. 4 singles action while Hurst and Tenney won at No. 3 doubles.

B-U’s No. 1 Ashton Hollen lost a heartbreaker to Miranda Taylor, 9-8 (7-4).

Rain has played havoc with the early part of the Lady Bucs’ schedule as they had postponements against Lincoln, Morgantown, North Marion, Wheeling Park and Brooke.

They were slated to play six matches in a busy week last week.

They will return to action today when they host East Fairmont at 4 p.m.

The Lady Bucs will travel to Clarksburg Tuesday for a 4 p.m. clash with Robert C. Byrd.
