Lady Buc netters fall in play last week

BUCKHANNON – The Buckhannon-Upshur tennis Lady Bucs dropped a trio of matches last week.

They dropped a 6-1 decision to Lewis County last Thursday and then lost a pair of outings on Saturday, losing to Philip Barbour by a 6-1 count and John Marshall by a 7-0 score at the West Virginia Wesleyan courts.

Against Lewis County, No. 1 Autumn Cutright defeated Kayleigh Paxton by an 8-2 score for the lone victory.

“Autumn got another win at No. 1 singles,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “She had some great rallies, and it was never really close. She played a great match.”

Against Philip Barbour, Ashtyn Goodman and Tori Adams got the lone win via forfeit at No. 3 doubles.

At No. 1 doubles, Cutright and Lainey Rowan came up just short at No. 1 doubles falling by an 8-6 score to Kat Beckwith and Mauren Miller and Malia Bowers and Madelyn Frye lost an 8-4 decision to Darcy Knight and Mimi Ferguson.

“I’m really proud of how the girls competed Saturday,” stated Rock. “Lainey and Autumn made a great team and nearly won their match against Philip Barbour and Malia and Madelyn had two of their best doubles performances of the year.”

The action left the Lady Bucs with a 0-12 mark.

They were slated to visit Elkins on Monday.

They will begin play in the Big 10 Conference Tournament today at Robert C. Byrd.
