Lady Buc cagers tumble to No. 1 Fairmont Senior, 76-47

Audrey Gaudet (15) puts a shot in over Fairmont Senior’s Morgan Lilley during the first half of their contest Thursday night at the high school. Gaudet scored a team-high 15 point and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the Lady Bucs’ 76-47 setback.

TENNERTON – For three quarters, the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs gave Class AA No. 1 Fairmont Senior all they could handle before the Polar Bears pulled away and ran up the score in a 76-47 defeat in Big 10 Conference action.

The loss ended a four-game winning streak for head coach Rob Kittle and his Lady Bucs.

The Lady Bucs raced out to  an 8-3 lead behind Shelby McDaniels  quick start of three baskets and Audrey Gaudet knocking down two free throws with 2:19 gone in the first quarter.

Fairmont Senior went on a 14-0 run though to end the quarter and take a 17-8 lead after one period of play.

Fairmont Senior extended their lead to 32-16 late in the second quarter but Gaudet made one of two at the line and then scored a lay-up to cut the lead to 32-19.

Following a basket by Fairmont Senior’s Courtney Wilfong, McKenzie Kittle made a free throw to make it a 34-20 deficit for the Lady Bucs at the half.

With two minutes gone in the third quarter Fairmont Senior pushed their lead to 18, at 40-22 but the Lady Bucs made a huge rally.

The Lady Bucs scored 14 unanswered points as Gaudet hit a jumper in the paint, Alli Robinson drove inside for a lay-up, Brooklyn Maxwell knocked down a baseline jumper, Gaudet put in a another lay-up, McDaniels drained two free throws, Maxwell scored two on a lay-up and Kassidy Wilfong capped off the run with a putback.

They cut the Polar Bear lead to just four, at 40-36.

Anysa Jordan hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Fairmont Senior to give them a 43-36 lead going into the final eight minutes.

And unfortunately for the Lady Bucs they had to play the quarter without Robinson who suffered an ankle injury during B-U’s run.

A Gaudet lay-up kept the Lady Bucs in the game as they were down 10, at 50-40 with 6:10 left but the Lady Bucs only scored one field goal over the next five minutes of the game as Fairmont Senior darted out to a 73-43 lead with their starters still in the game until the final minute.

Fairmont Senior continued to run up the score until the very end when Morgan Lilly hit an uncontested trey at the buzzer.

“The effort was there the whole night,” remarked Kittle. “They played the whole night and fought and scrapped, but we had a lot of things working against us tonight. We just didn’t have the same type of depth that Fairmont Senior did and Alli getting hurt really took the air out of our sails. We just couldn’t catch a break tonight.”

Gaudet and McDaniels led Buckhannon-Upshur with 15 points apiece while Maxwell added six.

The Lady Bucs shot 36.7 percent from the floor making good on 18 of their 49 field goal attempts.

“We still had missed oppurnities on the offensive end,” Kittle stated. “We missed four or five really good looks in the first half and we gave up two or three easy looks to them. It’s a different game at the half if we make those shots.”

Gaudet pulled down a team-high eight rebounds while McDaniels and Sydney Fletcher each had four rebounds.

Fairmont Senior, who improved to 11-1 on the season and 7-0 in the Big 10 Conference, was led Jordan and her 20 points.

Lady Bucs saw their record fall to 7-5 overall and 6-2 in the Big 10 Conference.

Buckhannon-Upshur was scheduled to play Wheeling Park Saturday but that game was canceled because of the weather.

The Lady Bucs will return to action Wednesday when they host East Fairmont at 7:30 p.m. and then visit Robert C. Byrd on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
