PARKERSBURG – Little went right for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs in their road encounter with the Parkersburg South Patriots Monday evening in their regular-season finale.
Early foul trouble, scoring droughts and turnovers led the Lady Bucs dropping a 69-44 decision to Parkersburg South.
In a scene that Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle has seen way too many times this season, the Lady Bucs got off to another slow start in a contest.
The Lady Bucs were guilty of 16 first-half turnovers.
The Lady Bucs trailed by a 6-0 score before Kennedy Samargo finally put them on the board with an outside jumper to make it a 6-2 game.
Parkersburg South scored the next eight points for a 14-2 lead before the Lady Bucs closed the first quarter on a 7-2 run.
Kendal Currence put in a jumper in the paint to make it a 14-4 game, and after a basket by Parkersburg South, Kiara Woods turned in a old-fashioned three-point play when she was fouled on her inside basket and Shelby McDaniels made a lay-up at the buzzer to bring the Lady Bucs to within seven, at 16-9.
The second quarter started out well enough for Buckhannon-Upshur.
After a basket by Parkersburg South’s Skylar Bosley to start the quarter, the Lady Bucs went on a 6-0 run behind a pair of free throws from McDaniels, a jumper from Brooklyn Maxwell and a lay-up by Currence.
That cut the lead to 18-15.
Parkersburg South went on a 5-0 run taking their lead back to 23-15 before Kennedy Samargo dropped in a pair of free throws to make it a 23-17 game.
The Lady Bucs then went cold offensively failing to score over the next four minutes as Parkersburg South went on a 12-0 run before Samargo hit a jumper making it a 35-19 contest.
Makenna Winans made a pair of free throws to wrap up the half, leaving the Lady Bucs down by a 37-19 score at the break.
Maxwell started the second half with a jumper, and after two free throws by Winans for the Patriots, Lexi Kelley made a free throw and Samargo scored on a lay-up to cut the lead to 15, at 39-24,
But the Lady Bucs hit a wall again going six minutes without a score as Parkersburg South went on an 11-0 run for a 50-24 advantage.
Maxwell finally scored for the Lady Bucs at the buzzer, hitting a long-distance three-pointer making it a 50-27 game going into the fourth quarter.
Maxwell started the fourth quarter the way she ended the third and that was with a three-pointer making it a 50-30 contest.
Parkersburg South scored six straight before Maxwell downed two free throws cutting the lead to 24, at 56-32.
Parkersburg South led 63-35 before Maxwell made a lay-up and Kelley put in a pair of free throws making it a 63-39 contest.
Parkersburg South took their biggest lead of the game, at 28 points, following a trey by Bosley, at 67-39.
Alayna Nesbitt unleashed a three-pointer to wrap up the scoring for the Lady Bucs.
Maxwell led the Lady Bucs with 14 points while Samargo contributed eight.
Winans had a game-high 25 points for Parkersburg South.
Parkersburg South improved to 8-12 on the season.
The Lady Bucs ended their season with a 13-8 record.
Buckhannon-Upshur will begin sectional play on Tuesday traveling to University for a 7 p.m. tip.
