Lady Buc cagers defeat Elkins, 68-56, tumble on the road at South Charleston

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers used a 14-0 third quarter run to defeat the Elkins Tigers on Senior Night by a 68-56 score Tuesday night at the high school gym.

Holding a one-point lead, at 34-33, the Lady Bucs held Elkins scoreless for over a five-minute period as they pulled away with the win.

The Lady Bucs honored their two seniors prior to the game – Brooklyn Maxwell and Kassidy Wilfong — and both responded with big games.

Maxwell scored 14 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists while Wilfong added five points and seven rebounds.

“It was a great night for both girls,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Rob Kittle. “They have been around through all the good times here and I couldn’t be happier to give them a win on Senior Night.”

It as a sophomore though who sparked the Lady Bucs and that was guard Shelby McDaniels.

McDaniels hit five three pointers for a game-high 21 points.

The Lady Bucs found themselves down by a 6-0 score before reeling off 11 straight points for an 11-6 lead.

During the run, McDaniels hit a trio of three pointers and Maxwell added two points at the free throw line.

Elkins ended the quarter on a 9-4 run to even the score at 15-15.

Alyssa Severino hit a three-pointer for Elkins to start the second quarter, but the Lady Bucs went on an 8-0 run with McKenzie Reynolds knocking down a free throw, Maxwell hitting two free throws and Lexi Kelley went off for five straight points treating Buckhannon-Upshur to a 23-18 lead with 4:22 left in the third quarter.

A free throw by Madison Holland and a basket by Autumn Lane closed it to a 23-21 score for Elkins, but Reynolds made two free throw an Maxwell grabbed a rebound and put it back in to up the B-U lead to 27-21 with 2:30 left in the half.

The Lady Bucs extended their lead to 10 after a Reynolds baseline jumper with 14 seconds to go, but Anna Belan made a jumper to end the half as Buckhannon-Upshur took a 32-24 lead into the break.

Elkins rattled off the first seven points of the third quarter to close the B-U lead down to just one, at 32-31, but Wilfong ended the run with a lay-up at the 5:59 mark to make it a 34-31 contest.

Belan put in another basket to make it a 34-33 but Elkins went cold from the floor not scoring another point during a five-minute stretch.

The Lady Bucs capitalized with a 14-0 run that ended on with a pair of free throws by McDaniels giving B-U a 48-33 lead.

McDaniels ended the quarter with a trey as Buckhannon-Upshur took a 52-35 lead into the fourth quarter.

Following a foul shot by Holland to start the fourth quarter, Kelley scored a lay-up and Kiara Woods scored underneath to give the Lady Bucs their biggest lead of the game, at 20 points, at 56-36.

Elkins closed it to 10 points, at 64-54, with 2:22 left in the game, but the Lady Bucs pushed their lead back to 12 at the end of the game.

Following McDaniels in the scoring column for the Lady Bucs were Maxwell with 14 and Reynolds with nine.

Belan led Elkins with a game-high 26 points.

A day earlier against South Charleston, the Bucs never scored in the first quarter and trailed by a 14-0 margin.

“It felt like we never got off the bus,” noted Kittle.”

Buckhannon-Upshur trailed at the half by a 35-13 score and was behind after three quarters by a 49-25 score.

They took the final quarter by an 11-10 score.

McDaniels had 10 points while Maxwell had nine.

Myra Cuffee had 21 points for South Charleston.

The split left the Lady Bucs with a 13-7 record.

“It’s tough to play back-to-back games,” concluded Kittle. “I was glad we were able to fight through that and find a way to defeat Elkins. We needed to get back on the court after the South Charleston game. A game is much more valuable to us than a practice would have been. I was really proud of our effort against Elkins.”

The Lady Bucs will host No. 1 Wheeling Park Friday at 6:45 p.m.
