Lady Bobcats split doubleheaders with West Virgina State and GSC

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team split a pair of Mountain East Conference doubleheaders last week against West Virginia State and Glenville State.

In a home twin bill last Sunday, the Lady ‘Cats won game one against West Virginia State by a 5-2 score but dropped 1-0 decision in game two.

Then last Wednesday, they lost an extra innings affair to Glenville State in the opener by a 7-6 score, but rebounded to win game two by a 6-1 score.

In game one against West Virginia State, Lauryn King staked Wesleyan to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when she hit a sacrifice fly that scored Destiny Alvarado.

West Virginia State scored their pair of runs in the top of the third for a 2-1 lead.

Wesleyan took the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Megan Magsamen doubled to left field scoring Lauren Niglio, Miranda Frye singled home Magsamen and Alvarado singled home Frye to give the Lady Bobcats a 4-2 advantage.

Wesleyan added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Magsamen scored on an error.

Kennedy Cowart led the Wesleyan eight-hit attack with three hits.

Hannah Hudson went the distance to improve her record to 8-5.

She allowed just two earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight.

In game two, Wesleyan was shutout managing just four hits.

The lone run of the game came in the top of the sixth for West Virginia State when Shian Meeks doubled home Brittany Allison.

Brooke Clark, Cowart, King and Frye each had a hit for Wesleyan.

Hudson suffered the loss in the circle in a complete-game effort.

She allowed one earned run on seven hits while striking out one.

In the opener with Glenville State, it took the Lady Pioneers nine innings to eke out a win over the Lady Bobcats.

Glenville State scored an unearned run in the top of the second and the game stayed at 1-0 until the fifth inning.

Wesleyan took a 3-1 in the top of the fifth after Cowart hit a one-run single and then scored along with Alvardo on a Lady Pioneer error.

Paranda Uber hit a solo home run for Glenville State in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 3-2 contest.

Cowart hit a two-run double in the top of the sixth inning for a 5-2 lead and Celia Valencia hit a ground out RBI in the top of the seventh to give Wesleyan a 6-2 advantage.

Wesleyan couldn’t hold on for the win however as Glenville State scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6 and then scored the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth.

Wesleyan had nine hits with Cowart and King each getting two apiece.

Hudson suffered the loss going all 8 2/3 innings.

She surrendered five earned runs on eight hits while striking out nine.

In game two, Glenville State scored their only run in the bottom of the first.

Wesleyan grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth when King scored on a error and Bowen hit a one-run-single.

King singled home Cowart in the top of the fifth to treat Wesleyan to a 3-1 lead.

Magsamen blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and Alvarado singled to right field scoring Valencia.

Wesleyan had 10 hits with King and Frye each getting two.

Haylee Shires earned the win for Wesleyan in a complete-game effort.

She gave up just one earned run on two hits while striking out four.

Wesleyan is now 14-16 overall and 7-9 in the MEC heading into this past weekend’s action. They were slated to play West Liberty Saturday and Wheeling Jesuit Sunday in a pair of MEC doubleheaders.

They will return to action Tuesday when they host Salem University in a non-conference twin bill starting at 4 p.m.
