Lady Bobcats settle for 1-1 tie with ABU


PHILIPPI – A Danielle Jonas second-half goal helped the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats avoid an upset loss to the winless Alderson Broaddus Battlers Friday evening in Mountain East Conference soccer action.

Wesleyan found themselves down by a 1-0 score after Alderson Broaddus’ Bianca Purpura knocked the ball into the left corner of the net in the 15th minute.

That score remained until the 81st minute when Morgan Mitchell set the ball high to Jonas who blasted it over Alderson Broaddus’ keeper Alexis McKeown’s head into the top left corner of the net tying the game.

Six minutes into the first half of overtime, Natalia Roppolo ripped a shot that was collected in goal. The Lady Bobcats found a couple of chances in the second half of overtime, but neither team delivered the golden goal.

Wesleyan owned a 7-6 lead in shots-on-goal while corner kicks were all even at 2-2.

Wesleyan was called for 17 fouls while Alderson Broaddus was guilty of 10.

Ally Moore made five saves for Wesleyan while McKeown made six saves for the Battlers.

The tie left Alderson Broaddus with 0-4-2 mark while Wesleyan is now 4-2-1.

The Lady Bobcats will return to action in their regular-season finale at Elkins taking on the Davis & Elkins Senators at 7 p.m.
