Lady Bobcats have rough evening against Shepherd


BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats had no answers for Shepherd’s senior guard Kari Lankford during their Mountain East Conference battle Wednesday evening at Rockefeller Center.

Lankford had a triple-double as she scored 22 points, dished out 12 assists and collected 10 rebounds as Shepherd had no trouble with the Lady ‘Cats in a 92-66 win.

A lay-up by Alexa Szelong and Abi Gabauer gave Wesleyan an early 4-3 lead but Shepherd scored 10 straight to take a 13-4 lead.

Nicole Gilyard interrupted the run with a jumper to make it a 13-6 contest but Shepherd closed the quarter on a 15-5 jaunt to take a 28-11 lead.

The closest Wesleyan could get in the second quarter was 12 points after a pair of Gabauer free throws, at 32-20, with 6:45 remaining in the half.

Shepherd dominated the final six minutes of the half as they outscored Wesleyan b y a 21-12 margin to take a 53-32 lead at the break.

Wesleyan outscored Shepherd in the third quarter by a 20-19 margin but could never get closer than 15 points after a pair of free throws by Szelong that made it a 55-40 contest.

The Lady ‘Cats were down by 20 entering the final period, at 72-52.

A Gilyard lay-up at the 8:33 mark in the fourth quarter kept Wesleyan down 16, at 74-58, but Shepherd outscored the Lady Bobcats 18-8 margin the rest of the way.

The Lady Bobcats shot just 32.4 percent from the floor hitting on 23 of their 71 field goal attempts.

Gilyard came off the bench to lead the offense with 13 points while Tyra Hughes scored 11 and Szelong 10.

Following Lankford in the scoring column for Shepherd were Kayla Tibbs with 21 and Marley McLaughlin with 14.

Shepherd improved to 9-8 overall and 6-5 in the MEC.

Wesleyan dropped to 4-10 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

Head coach Vicky Bullett and her Lady ‘Cats will play again Saturday when they host Glenville State Saturday at 2 p.m.
