Lady Bobcats go 2-2 in Florida with wins over U. of the Sciences and Walsh

CLERMONT (Fla.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team went 2-2 over two days of action on Monday and Tuesday in Florida during their spring break trip.

On Monday morning, they lost a 2-1 decision to Mercyhurst but came back to beat University of the Sciences by a 4-1 score that afternoon.

Tuesday’s action saw them beat Walsh by a 12-8 score that morning but drop a 12-2 contest to Georgian Court University right after the Walsh win.

The split left head coach Steven Warner’s young squad with a 4-6 record.

It took extra innings for Mercyhurst to down Wesleyan.

Wesleyan scored first against Mercyhurst in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Kennedy Cowart, but the Lakers tied the game in the bottom of the eighth and then won it in the bottom of the ninth on a squeeze bunt by Emma LeGendre that scored Taylor Fry.

In Monday’s second game, Wesleyan made the most of their five hits in their win against U. of the Sciences.

Kiley Turner hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to treat Wesleyan to a 2-0 lead.

After the U. of the Sciences scored their run in the top of the fourth, Wesleyan scored their last two in the bottom of the fifth.

Megan Magsamen scored on a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Clark and Clark later scored on a sacrifice fly by Destiny Alvarado.

Celia Valencia, Cowart, Lauren Niglio, Turner and Magsamen each had a hit for Wesleyan.

Kelley Bourne went the distance for the win as she gave up just one earned run on seven hits while walking one and fanning four.

Tuesday’s first game with Gannon saw the Lady ‘Cats erupt for six runs in the top of the first inning.

Turner had a two-run single and Magsamen hit a two-run triple to highlight the inning for Wesleyan.

Walsh chipped away at the lead scoring two in the bottom of the first, one in the third and one in the fourth to make it a 6-4 game.

Wesleyan answered in the top of the fifth inning when Clark launched a three-run home run to center field to give Wesleyan a 9-4 advantage.

The Lady ‘Cats increased their lead to 12-4 with a trio of runs in the top of the fourth with Cowart, Alvarado and Turner each getting an RBI.

Walsh scored four times in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t get any closer than four runs.

Clark, Cowart and Alvarado each had two hits for Wesleyan in their 11-hit attack.

Hayle Shires (2-2) tossed a complete game for Wesleyan.

She gave up eight earned runs on 10 hits while walking four and striking out two.

In the last game on Tuesday, Georgian Court jumped out to a 5-0 lead but Wesleyan countered with two runs in the bottom of the second on a Magsamen two-run blast to center field.

That made it a 5-2 contest but the Lady ‘Cats were blanked the rest of the game on the scoreboard.

Georgian Court scored twice in the fourth, one in the fifth and four more in the sixth inning for the 12-2 win that was ended on the 10-run mercy rule.

Wesleyan had five hits with Magsamen collecting two.

Bourne suffered the loss going five innings surrendering seven earned runs on eight hits while walking four.

Wesleyan was slated to wrap up the Florida part of their trip Wednesday with games against Mercy College and Assumption College.

Their five games scheduled for Salem (Va.) today through Sunday were canceled because of impending bad weather that is slated to hit that area.

Wesleyan will return to action Saturday, March 16 at home against Shepherd in a MEC doubleheader.

First pitch is scheduled for  2 p.m.

They will remain home that Sunday to host Fairmont State.
