Lady Bobcats get win over No. 25 Charleston in MEC doubleheader

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team picked up a win over nationally-ranked Charleston this past Friday in a home doubleheader at Culpepper Field.

Charleston entered the doubleheader ranked No. 25 in the nation.

The Golden Eagles took game one by a 17-6 score but the Lady ‘Cats rebounded to take game two by a 5-2 score.

In game one, Charleston got off to a quick start with a six-run first inning.

Kelley Bourne hit a solo home run for Wesleyan in the bottom of the second to put Wesleyan on the board, but Charleston scored another run in the top of the third for a 7-1 lead.

Bella Posey hit a one-run single, and Molly Osborne hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 7-4 game, but Charleston exploded for 10 runs in the top of the fifth for a 17-4 lead.

Charleston hit three home runs in the inning.

Kennedy Cowart and Kiley Turner each hit solo home runs for Wesleyan in the bottom of the fifth to wrap up the scoring as the game was called on the mercy rule.

Wesleyan had six hits in the loss.

Ciana Bowen (0-1) got the start for Wesleyan and gave up 13 earned runs on 14 hits going 4 1/3 innings.

In game two, Wesleyan built a 2-0 lead after three innings of play after Grace Hightower and Brooke Clark each hit solo home runs in the bottom of the third.

Charleston tied the game after Allysa Lake hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth and Hannah Rose hit a sacrifice fly that scored Karli Pinkerton in the top of the sixth, at 2-2.

Turner broke the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run and Clark hit a two-run single to center giving Wesleyan a 5-2 lead.

Wesleyan starter Abigail O’Shields gave up a single in the top of the seventh but kept Charleston off the board to preserve the win.

O’Shields improved to 8-4 with the complete-game effort.

She allowed just two earned runs on seven hits and struck out six.

The split left Wesleyan with a 14-10 mark overall and in the MEC.

West Virginia Wesleyan was supposed to host West Virginia State in a home doubleheader on Sunday, but that game was postponed.

They will play again today visiting Frostburg State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
