Lady Bobcat cagers tumble to West Liberty, 82-51


WEST LIBERTY – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats fell behind early and were never able to recover en route to an 82-51 setback at the hands of the homestanding West Liberty Hilltoppers Wednesday evening in a Mountain East Conference outing.

Wesleyan kept the game close nine minutes in the first quarter.

A Nicole Gilyard jumper gave Wesleyan an early 4-3 lead but West Liberty scored seven unanswered for a 10-4 lead.

A lay-up by Amira Layeni cut the Wesleyan deficit to three, at 15-12, with 1:07 left in the first quarter, but West Liberty scored the final seven points of the quarter for a 22-12 advantage.

The Hilltoppers scored the first six points of the second quarter opening up a 16-point lead, at 28-12.

Wesleyan trimmed it down to 13 following a lay-up by Imani Jackson, at 31-18, but West Liberty ended the half with a 4-1 run for a 35-19 lead at the break.

Following a lay-up by Audrey Tingle, West Liberty stretched their lead to 23, at 44-21, with 7:27 left in the third quarter.

A lay-up by Brittany Stawovy brought the lead back down to 14 for Wesleyan, at 48-34, with 2:36 left in the quarter, but the Hilltoppers closed with a 7-2 run for a 55-36 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

Wesleyan couldn’t get any closer than 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Wesleyan made just 20 of their 70 field goal attempts for a  28.6 shooting average.

Stawovy led Wesleyan in scoring with 13 points while Gilyard had 12.

Cierra Tolbert had a game-high 12 rebounds for Wesleyan.

West Liberty shot the ball at a 42.3 percent clip making good on 30 of their 71 field goal attempts.

Morgan Brunner led West Liberty with a double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Taylor Johnson added 14 points for the Hilltoppers.

West Liberty improved to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the MEC.

Wesleyan dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the MEC.

The Lady Bobcats will return to the court this Saturday when they host Wheeling in a MEC outing at 2 p.m.
