Kid’s Candy Rush event generates a buzz at Elkins Raceway

KERANS — The usual break-neck racing action at Elkins Raceway took a brief pause during the regularly scheduled intermission between races to celebrate the youth, as track staff dumped over 5,000 pieces of candy along the front stretch and allowed the kids to fill containers to their hearts delight. The track organized this event in order to celebrate families, who by bringing the next generation of fans to the track will ensure a bright future for racing at the local Elkins Raceway.

As the young fans began to settle back into their spot in the stands to share their treats, regular season racing action resumed.

Despite Michal Lake seemingly holding the fastest car in the early stages of the Super Lates Division races, after both qualifying first and winning the first heat, Jason Covert made the proper adjustments to catch Lake as he took home the checkered flag the all-important featured race.

Kyle Lukon dominated Saturday night’s Crates Division, using a strong qualifying run to secure the pole. Lukon leveraged his strong starting spot to win the first heat and then capped off his impressive night with a win in the featured race.

In what is becoming a weekly tradition of late, the young Mitch Thomas had the dominant car in the Modifieds Division races. After taking the pole with a blazing fast qualifying run, Thomas won the first 6-lap heat, as well as the 20-lap main event to add another weekend of racing to his stellar 2022 season resume.

In Steet Stock Division racing, while Kevin Keene enjoyed a solid qualifying run, finishing just behind Phil Jefferies who paced the field; he really stepped it up once the green flag waved in the first and only heat, earning a hard-fought win. The momentum Keene generated by winning the heat carried over into the featured race, where he drove a flawless race and earned his second checkered flag of the evening.

Finally, in Hot Mods Division action, it looked as if it was Rodger Hull’s night, as he sat atop the leaderboards after both a strong qualifying run and a win in the first 6-lap heat. However, Josh Sigeler had consistently gotten faster all night and had gotten off to a furious start in the featured race. Ultimately, Sigler was able to fend off the field and take home the main event win to wrap up last Saturday’s hard-nosed racing.

This coming Saturday, June 25 Elkins Raceway is hosting another evening of regular season racing, as well as the track’s Wall of Legends Ceremony, and the Skidmore Memorial race. A whopping $3,000 will be awarded to the super late model winner alongside an increased payout for all other classes. In order to properly celebrate next weekend’s festivities fans are encouraged to bring their cameras as the track will be holding fireworks display during this event.
