JV Lady Bucs tumble to Elkins in close one, 26-24


ELKINS – The Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Lady Bucs and the Elkins Lady Tigers battled neck-and-neck for 32 minutes, but unfortunately for the Lady Bucs they came up just short with a 26-24 setback.

The Lady Bucs took a 7-6 lead after one quarter behind Amara Guerra, Kiara Woods, and Justice Courtney each scoring a basket and McKinley Bonnett putting in a free throw.

The Lady Bucs managed just five points in the second quarter, getting a basket from Lexi Kelley, two free throws from Olivia Ellis and a free throw by Leah Moore and fell behind at the half by three points at 15-12.

Buckhannon-Upshur outscored Elkins by a 6-5 margin in the third quarter as Woods had four points and Ellis and Moore one each.

That left the Lady Bucs down by two, heading into the last quarter by a 20-18 score.

The final quarter was even at 6-6 as Ellis, Woods and Alayna Nesbitt each dropped in a basket.

Woods led the Lady Buc offense with eight points while Courtney had five.

Autumn Lane paced Elkins with 10 points.

The JV Lady Bucs (0-2) will return to the court Thursday when they visit Preston for a 5:45 p.m. outing.
