The 2021-2022 Buckhannon-Upshur High SchoolJunior Varsity Lady Bucs ended their season with great promos for next year! DALTON WRIGHT /The Record Delta

TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School junior varsity girls basketball team concluded the 2021-22 season with a 5-11 record. Despite their overall record, the team finished the season on a high note after winning 2 of the last 3 games.

The Lady Bucs led wire-to-wire against East Fairmont to pick up the third win of the season by a final score of 37-26 back on Monday, February 7. Casadie Lahman dropped 15 points, while Brooklyn Smith chipped in 11 points; their combined scoring efforts carried the B-U team to a huge win on the road.

After improving to 3-10 with the win over the junior varsity Bees, the JV Bucs were not done showing how much they have grown over the course of the season quite yet. The very next night, Tuesday, February 8, they played host to rival Elkins, collecting another win to move their record on the week to a perfect 2-0.

Looking more and more like a dangerous team, B-U headed north to Grafton to take on the Bearcats. Brooklyn Smith scored 5 early points, helping the Lady Bucs get out to an early 11-point, 14-3 lead heading into the second quarter. The JV Lady Bucs effort and intensity did not wane after the game’s opening quarter, as they cruised to a 21-point, 36-17 win. Regina Petrokovich provided a steady scoring touch, finishing the game as B-U’s leading scorer with 11 points.

After improving to 3-0 on the week, the JV Lady Bucs concluded their season with a 23-point, 45-22 loss at home against Morgantown on Valentine’s Day. Following a stretch of games, in which they had played some of their best basketball of the year, the JV Lady Bucs went ice cold in the first quarter of the game against Morgantown, only managing to score 2 points. The team mounted a valiant effort but could not overcome the overwhelming early lead that the Mohicans had built. Petrokovich and Lahman each scored 8 points apiece to lead the B-U offensively.

Despite falling along the way,, the team continually improved with each passing game. It takes time for a team to learn how to win and during the latter stages of the 2021-22 campaign, the JV Lady Bucs found out what it took to close out games. The experience they gained this season will only benefit the B-UHS girls basketball program entering next year, with many faces on this year’s junior varsity team poised to make the jump to the varsity level next year.
