ELKINS — The Buckhannon-Upshur boys junior varsity team (5-8) traveled to take on rival Elkins last Wednesday, February 9.

Sophomore standout Luke Yardley opened the game on an offensive tear for head coach Keith Wolverton’s junior varsity Bucs, scoring 6 points in the first quarter. At the end of the opening period, the two teams found themselves neck-and-neck, tied at 11. The Bucs broke this tie with a huge run in the second quarter in which they outscored the Tigers 14-4, to take a 10-point, 25-15 lead heading into the locker-room for halftime.

Elkins stormed back into the game with a 21-point explosion in the third quarter to tie the game at 36-36 entering the fourth and final quarter. With their lead at great risk of slipping away entirely, the Bucs defense responded in a big way, holding the Tigers to only 2 total points in the fourth quarter on their way to securing a huge 10-point, 48-38 road win.

With the win, the JV Bucs improve their record to 6-8 on the season. Junior forward Shawn Blandino paced the Bucs offensively, scoring 14 points on efficient shooting. Yardley ended the game with 9 total points, including his 6 early first quarter points, to finish as the team’s second leading scorer. Both Nathaniel Ringer and Jaden Westfall scored 8 points each, recording nearly flawless games shooting the ball from the field in the process. JV players Jonas Barton with 4 points, Carter Zuliani with 3 points and Jonas Barton with 1 point wrapped up the scoring numbers for Buckhannon in their big road win over Elkins.
