JV Bucs open strong with 67-49 victory over Patriots

WHEELING – The Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Buccaneers opened their 2019-20 season with a solid effort in a 67-49 victory over the homestanding Wheeling Park Patriots Saturday afternoon.

The game was delayed almost 20 minutes while waiting for officials to arrive, but the late start didn’t slow down the Bucs.

With Mason Hyre unleashing a pair of three-pointers, Harrison Walker adding two free throws and Sterlin Thropp one, the Bucs owned a 9-8 lead after one quarter of action.

The Bucs nearly doubled up Wheeling Park in the second quarter by a 19-10 score.

Walker poured in seven points in the quarter while Noam Keith tacked on six, Zach Calef-Boring hit a trey, Thropp added two free throws and Euan Kettle one free throw to account for the scoring.

Buckhannon-Upshur took a 28-18 lead into the break.

The Bucs built on their lead in the third quarter outscoring Wheeling Park by a 20-10 score.

Buckhannon-Upshur got balanced scoring in the stanza from six players.

Calef-Boring had five points while Hyre and Keith each had four, Walker three, and Kettle and Oliver King two each.

That treated the Bucs to a 48-28 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Despite Calef-Boring going off for eight points, Thropp four, Keith three, Walker two and Kaiden McDaniels one, the Bucs lost the final quarter by a 21-20 score but still won the game by 18 points.

Calef-Boring led the Bucs with 16 points while Walker added 14 and Hyre nine.

Dorian Smelley led Wheeling Park with 14 points.

The Bucs, now 1-0, will return to action at home Wednesday against Lincoln at West Virginia Wesleyan College for a 5:45 p.m. start.
