JV Bucs fall to Philip Barbour and Riverside

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Bucs had a rough two games last week dropping a pair of home games to Philip Barbour and Riverside.

The Bucs lost a 70-54 decision to Philip Barbour on Thursday then lost a 70-48 decision to Riverside on Saturday afternoon.

Will McCauley dropped in seven points, Tyler Sandreth nailed a 3-pointer and Trey Heatherly, Harrison Walker and Sterlin Thropp each added a basket, but the Bucs lost the first quarter to the Colts by a 21-16 margin.

Thropp scored five points with Jay Burnside, Walker, Landon Hitt, and Oliver King each scoring a basket in a 13-point second quarter for the Bucs.

They trailed at the half by a 36-29 score.

Buckhannon-Upshur managed just 11 points in the third quarter with Walker and Thropp each scoring five and Kaiden McDaniels adding a free throw.

The Bucs went into the final quarter down 13, at 53-40.

Hitt scored five points while McDaniels and Cody Bailey each added a trey, King contributed two and Burnside one in a 14-point fourth-quarter for the Bucs.

Thropp led Buckhannon-Upshur with 12 points while Walker had nine and McCauley seven.

Against Riverside, the Bucs were competitive for three quarters before things went south for them in the final quarter.

The Bucs were down by just two after the first quarter, at 19-17, after McCauley poured in six points, Sandreth five, Walker three, Burnside two and Noam Keith one.

Riverside outscored the Bucs in the second quarter by a 15-13 margin.

Sandreth tallied four points, Hitt nailed a 3-pointer, and Burnside, Thropp and Keith each had a basket in the second quarter, but B-U still trailed at the half by four, at 34-30.

With Walker scoring five, McDaniels three, Thropp and Burnside two each, the Bucs went into the final quarter down by seven, at 49-42.

Buckhannon-Upshur managed just one field goal, a 3-pointer by Bailey, and three free throws, two by Shelton Thropp and one by Hitt in the final quarter that went to Riverside by a 21-6 margin.

Sandreth led the Bucs with nine points while Walker scored eight and McCauley and Burnside each had six apiece.

The two setbacks left the Bucs with a 5-9 record.

They will return to action Tuesday when they host Bridgeport for a 5:45 p.m. contest.

They will follow that up with a visit to Weston for a battle with the Lewis County Minutemen Thursday at 5:45 p.m.
