WESTON – Volleyball fans who like nail-biters would have loved the three-set junior varsity match here last Tuesday night between the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Lady Bucs and Robert L. Bland’s Lady Patriots.
The Little Lady Bucs dropped the opening set by a 28-26 score, and after they bounced back to claim a 27-25 triumph in the middle set, they fell in the third, 26-24.
“These girls have really paid attention to the details in practice and are putting them into their game,” coach Sheena Westfall said. “We are doing the basics of bump, set, spike, and our offense is looking good.”
Emmalea Lipps piled up a team-leading 14 aces. Following her were Maggie Ketterman with five, Reagan Mason with four, Ava Lantz with three, and Sophia Lantz and Bailey Radabaugh with one apiece.
Ketterman notched three kills, with Lipps marking up two.
Riley Vincent was the digs pace-setter with 15, with Ava Lantz right behind with 13, Mason contributed six, Ketterman chipped in with five and Lipps added three.
Lipps recorded three assists.
“Emmalea Lipps dominated with her serves,” Westfall said. “She is quick to get back on the court, which is helping us on the defensive end. Ava Lantz and Riley Vincent held down the back court with getting good passes to the front for us to run an offense.
“We have sixth graders stepping up and contributing, and as a team, they look like they are growing together and getting stronger each set.”
The Little Lady Bucs saw their record drop to 1-2 going in to tonight’s road contest with the Elkins Lady Green Hornets. They will return home to face Belington’s Lady Hawks Tuesday night.
