Junior varsity Lady Bucs fall to Hawks and Huskies

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Lady Bucs dropped a pair of games last week.

They lost a 28-23 decision at home to the University Hawks last Friday and then two days prior to that, dropped a 61-38 road verdict to the North Marion Lady Huskies.

The two losses left the junior varsity Lady Bucs with a 1-3 record overall.

Against University, the junior varsity Lady Bucs had things in hand until a fourth-quarter that saw them score just three points.

With Alayna Nesbitt scoring four points and Ciara Melton two, Buckhannon-Upshur trailed by just one after the first quarter, at 7-6.

Behind Melton’s eight points and Nesbitt’s two, B-U won the second quarter by a 10-7 margin and led going into the half, at 16-14.

A slow-moving third quarter saw both teams combine for just seven points as the period went to the junior varsity Lady Bucs by a 4-3 score.

Kennedy Samargo and Melton each had a basket in the quarter as B-U took a 20-17 advantage into the final frame.

The junior varsity Lady Bucs though managed just one field goal by Samargo and a free throw by Kiara Woods as they dropped the quarter by an 11-3 margin and the game by a 28-23 score.

Melton led Buckhannon-Upshur with 12 points while Nesbitt had six.

Sierra Lanham and Lindsey Vorndran each had eight points to lead University.

Against North Marion the junior varsity Lady Bucs fell behind by a big margin after one quarter of play and never caught back up.

North Marion outscored B-U by a 17-5 margin in that opening quarter as the only baskets belonged to Nesbitt who uncorked a 3-pointer and Rachel Long who scored on a jumper.

The second quarter wasn’t much kinder to the junior varsity Lady Bucs as they were outscored by a 15-7 margin.

Samargo scored three points and Woods and Justice Courtney each had two, but B-U found themselves down by a 32-12 margin at the intermission.

B-U was outscored by a 20-12 margin in the third quarter.

Melton tallied four points, Nesbitt unleashed another trey, Brooklyn Bryant and Robin Ball each made a basket and Woods dropped in a free throw for the junior varsity Lady Bucs in the third as they trailed going into the final eight minutes by a 52-24 score.

With Nesbitt connecting on a pair of 3-pointers, Samargo putting in three points, Bryant and Courtney two each and Rachel Long one, B-U won the final quarter by a 14-9 margin.

Nesbitt was the only Buckhannon-Upshur player to reach double digits as she scored 12.

Samargo added six while Bryant, Melton and Courtney each added four apiece.

Buckhannon-Upshur will return to action Friday, Jan. 4 when they host Grafton at 5:45 p.m.
