Junior varsity Lady Bucs cruise past Grafton, 45-25

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Lady Bucs used a massive first quarter to bury the Grafton Bearcats and never look back en route to a 45-25 victory Friday night.

The Lady Bucs stormed out to a 20-5 lead after one quarter and never let Grafton back into the game.

Alayna Nesbitt scored seven first-quarter points while Kennedy Samargo poured in six, Olivia Ellis drained a 3-pointer and Ciara Melton and Rachel Long each flipped in a basket for the Lady Bucs.

Buckhannon-Upshur limited Grafton just two free throws in the second quarter as they took the frame by a 9-2 score.

Nesbitt led the charge with four points while Long and Brooklyn Bryant each put in a basket and Ellis added a free throw.

That gave the Lady Bucs a 29-7 lead at the break.

The Lady Bucs won a low-scoring third quarter by a 6-4 margin.

Justice Courtney and Melton each scored three points apiece as the Lady Bucs went into the final quarter up by a 35-11 score.

Grafton won the final quarter by a 14-10 margin.

In the final period, Samargo and Robin Ball each tallied four points while Long had two for the Lady Bucs.

Nesbitt scored a game-high 11 points while Samargo added 10 and Long six.

The win improved coach Chad Wilfong’s team to 2-3 on the season.

The Lady Bucs will return to action today when they host Liberty at 5:45 p.m.
