Junior varsity football Bucs win opener against Elkins, 20-12

The Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity defense lines up against Elkins Monday night in their opener at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium. The JV Bucs downed Elkins, 20-12.

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Buccaneers opened their football season ahead of the varsity on Monday in a home battle with the Elkins Tigers.

The Bucs won their opener by a 20-12 score.

Blake Runyon and Luke Yardley had rushing touchdowns for the Bucs while Carter Zuliani had a receiving touchdown from the arm of quarterback Bryson Johnston.

“I thought we were able to run the ball well and the offensive line had some good consistency,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur assistant coach Sloan Baisden. “We had the ability to make plays when it mattered. Zuliani’s touchdown catch was on a third and long situation with the momentum shifting towards Elkins in the third quarter and we closed out the win with a big defensive stop and interception by Drake Davis.”

The Bucs, now 1-0 on the season, will return to action Monday at Bridgeport for a 6 p.m. kickoff with the Indians.
