Junior varsity Bucs hold on for 65-63 win over Bees

FAIRMONT – The Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Buccaneers held on for dear life and escaped with a 65-63 victory over the East Fairmont Bees here Tuesday night.

The Bucs led by a 41-22 score at the half but watched the Bees storm back behind Landen Larnerd’s 35 points, but the Bucs ultimately held on for the two-point win.

The victory was the second in a row for the Bucs of coach Jason Westfall as they improved their record to 4-6.

With Tyler Sandreth scoring 12 points including hitting two treys and Will McCauley firing in eight points and Josh Loudin and Harrison Walker two each, the Bucs raced out to a 24-7 lead after one-quarter of play.

With Noam Keith putting in six points, Sandreth five and Sterling Thropp, Oliver King and Walker each adding two, the Bucs won the second quarter by a 17-15 margin.

That kept them ahead at the break by 19, at 41-22

The Bucs managed just four field goals in the third quarter.

Jay Burnside scored four points and Keith and Landon Hitt each scored two apiece as the quarter went to East Fairmont by a 22-8 margin.

Buckhannon-Upshur though still led going into the final quarter by a 49-44 score.

With the lead going back and forth in the final quarter, the last eight minutes went to East Fairmont by a 19-16 margin.

Walker tallied seven points while Keith garnered four, Burnside three, and King two in the final frame.

Sandreth scored a team-high 17 points, all in the first half, while Keith scored 12 and Walker 11.

The Bucs were slated to play Robert C. Byrd Thursday night.

They will return to action Saturday as they visit the Elkins Tigers for a 5:45 p.m. start.
