Junior varsity Buccaneers fall to Bridgeport, 56-47

BRIDGEPORT – The Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Buccaneers suffered a 56-47 setback to the homestanding Bridgeport Indians Wednesday evening.

The difference in the game came at the free throw line where Bridgeport was a solid 20-for-26 while the Bucs made it to the line just nine times despite going eight-for-nine from the free-throw stripe.

The Bucs led early in a high-scoring first quarter by an 18-15 margin.

Just two players scored for the Bucs in that first quarter as Harrison Walker tallied 10 points and Sterlin Thropp eight.

The two teams played to an even 9-9 second quarter with Noam Keith scoring four points in his one quarter of junior varsity action while Thropp scored three and Euan Kettle had two.

That left the Bucs up by a 27-24 score at the half.

The Bucs managed just two field goals in the third quarter, a basket by Thropp and Wilbur Snyder, as they lost the quarter by an 11-4 score.

That left the Bucs down heading into the final quarter by a 35-31 score.

The Bucs were outscored in the final quarter by a 21-16 margin.

Walker and Thropp each had seven points apiece for the Bucs while Snyder added two.

Thropp led the Bucs with 18 points while Walker collected 17

Antonio Renzelli led the Indians with 15 points.

The loss was the third in a row for the Bucs as they dropped to 13-3 overall.

Their game on Friday with Lewis County was postponed until Feb. 26.

They will return to action Wednesday at Elkins for a 5:45 p.m. start.
