JoAnn Walker O’Dell

JoAnn Walker O’Dell departed this life on Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 2021, and entered into eternal glory to live forever with her heavenly father. JoAnn was born on September 12, 1931, in Leslie, WV. The first-born child of Cletis Franklin and Margaret Louise Carroll Walker, JoAnn spent many of her formative years with her grandparents, Maydell and Joseph Carrington Carroll.

JoAnn was united in marriage to John Keith O’Dell in October of 1951. Together they raised one son and three daughters.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband, John Keith O’Dell in October of 1991 and Charles K. Church in July of 2007. She was also preceded in death by two children, her first born son, Keith Wayne O’Dell and her daughter, Sharyl Jo.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her baby sister and best friend, Beverly Walker Truman. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Cletis Franklin Walker Jr. and Kenneth Wayne Walker.

JoAnn is survived by her baby brother, Ronald Guy Walker, of Rupert, WV, and a very special sister, Sandra Kay Walker Adams and husband, Ron, of Orange County, California. JoAnn is also survived by eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.

JoAnn has two surviving daughters to love and cherish her memories and to carry on the legacy she has left, Sheila Gayle O’Dell-Talbott and husband, Phillip Wayne, of Lewisburg, WV, and Susan Lynn O’Dell-Harman and husband, Gary, of Buckhannon, WV.

JoAnn’s legacy is one of amazing strength and courage, a legacy of kindness, loving, giving, caring, and sharing God’s amazing message.

JoAnn will be best remembered by her family, her church, and her community, for the selfless giving to all she knew that was in need, whether that would be in physical comfort, or spiritual comfort. JoAnn was the one at Christmas who would take most of the angels from the Angel Tree at church and fill those Christmas boxes with so much love, it overflowed. She never failed to visit the shut-ins to pray with them, sit with them, and share her journey to the cross.

JoAnn filled the pulpit on many occasions. She will be fondly remembered by the first message she gave “What it means to believe.” JoAnn taught Adult Bible Study, children’s church, and Bible school for over 40 years and was a camp counselor at Baptist camp in Cowen, WV where she led many little ones to the lord. JoAnn’s legacy will live on in the lives she touched.
