Jayvee Bucs split games with RCB and Elkins

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur junior varsity Buccaneers split a pair of games during a three-day stretch late last week.

The Bucs cruised past Robert C. Byrd on Thursday at home by a 73-40 score but dropped a 72-61 decision to the Elkins Tigers on the road Saturday night.

The split left coach Jason Westfall’s crew with a 5-7 record.

Behind Josh Loudin’s eight first-quarter points the Bucs raced out to an 18-5 lead and never looked back against the Eagles.

Tyler Sandreth added four and Jay Burnside, Noam Keith and Harrison Walker each added a basket for the Bucs in the first.

Buckhannon-Upshur kept the offense coming in the second quarter as they outscored Robert C. Byrd by a 20-12 margin.

Will McCauley scored six while Landon Hitt and Sandreth tallied five apiece and Sterling Thropp added four during the second as the Bucs took a 38-17 lead into the break.

Sandreth scored six, McCauley and Keith each four apiece and Walker two as the Bucs took the third quarter by a 16-10 margin.

That gave them a 54-27 advantage heading into the final quarter.

The final quarter went to B-U by a 19-13 margin as Kaiden McDaniels put in five points, Thropp and Cody Bailey four each, Hitt three, Keith two and Wilbur Snider one.

Sandreth scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Bucs while McCauley put in 10 and Keith, Loudin, Hitt and Thropp each had eight apiece.

Against Elkins, the two teams both started out hot on the offensive end as the quarter went to Elkins by a 26-20 margin.

Loudin scored seven points while McCauley had six, Mason Hyre three, and Sandreth and Burnside two each for the Bucs in the opening eight minutes of action.

The Bucs won the second quarter by a 17-13 margin as Loudin fired in seven points, Sandreth six, and McCauley and Hyre two each as the Bucs trailed by a 39-37 score at the intermission.

The Bucs lost the third quarter by a 17-11 margin as McCauley scored seven, Sandreth two and Thropp two.

That left the Bucs down by a 56-48 score heading into the final quarter.

The Bucs were outscored by a 16-13 margin in the final frame as Thropp scored six, Walker four, Trey Heatherly two and Snider one.

Will McCauley scored a team-best 15 points while Loudin scored 14 and Sandreth 10.

The Bucs will return to action Thursday when they host Philip Barbour at 5:45 p.m.
