Isaac Stankus pulls off a pair of upsets for conference title

SHINNSTON – Buckhannon-Upshur’s Isaac Stankus won a Big 10 Conference title with a pair of huge upsets at the No. 2 seed in the recent Big 10 Conference Championships played at Lincoln High School.

After a two-day delay because of rain, the junior breezed through his competition to claim a conference title.

Stankus received a first-round bye in the tournament and then defeated Bridgeport’s Patrick Reneau by an 8-2 score.

Stankus pulled off a huge upset over top seed Daniel Corley of Elkins in the semifinals by an 8-5 score.

In the title match, he defeated second seed Justin Vance of Lincoln by an 8-2 score.

Bridgeport claimed the team title while Lincoln was second and Lewis County was third. East Fairmont placed fourth and Elkins rounded out the top five in the 12-team field.

East Fairmont’s Rodney Anselene was named the Big 10 Conference boys coach of the year.

The Bucs were slated to compete in this past weekend (results have not been turned in) while the state tournament is slated to begin today in Charleston.
