Ingram shines as baseball ‘Cats end year with a twin bill sweep over Davis & Elkins

BUCKHANNON – Sam Ingram knocked in six runs to help the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats to a 14-7 win against Davis & Elkins in game one of a doubleheader on Thursday.

Ingram followed that up with a three-hit, two RBI performance in game two as the ‘Cats won a 14-4 decision.

The two games were the season finale for the Bobcats.

They ended the year with a 7-23 record.

In game one, Davis & Elkins jumped into a 5-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but Wesleyan started to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the first with a run when Nick Grotti scored Ingram on a ground out.

The ‘Cats put together a five-run inning of their own in the bottom of the second.

Ingram, Grotti, Cade Leach and Eric Forbrick each had an RBI for the ‘Cats in the inning as they took a 6-5 lead.

Ingram hit a two-run single in the bottom of the third upping Wesleyan’s lead to 8-5.

Najay King hit a solo home run for the Senators in the top of the fourth making it an 8-6 game.

Wesleyan answered with another five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth with Bryson Fluke hitting a two-run single, Tyler Ostendorf hitting a one-run single and Ingram hitting a two-run double.

That treated Wesleyan to a 13-6 lead.

Wesleyan added a run in the sixth when Ingram hit a one-run double to left field.

D&E’s McMillion hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to wrap up the scoring.

Ingram had four of Wesleyan’s 13 hits while Grotti, Fluke, and McCallister each had two.

Alec Tamburri (2-0) pitched 6 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win.

He gave up two runs on five hits while striking out five.

In game two, the Senators scored two runs in the top of the first but Wesleyan matched those two runs in the bottom of the first when Eric Forbrick hit a one-run single and Trahern White hit a sacrifice fly.

Wesleyan took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second behind an Ingram ground out RBI and a McCallister scoring on an error.

Wesleyan added two more in the bottom of the third when White and Andrew Walker both scored on wild pitches for a 6-2 lead.

A five-run fourth inning treated Wesleyan to an 11-2 lead.

Fluke hit a one-run single, Ingram hit a one-run single and a two-run error and a wild pitch led to the five runs.

Walker hit a one-run single and Fluke hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to give Wesleyan a 13-2 advantage.

King hit a two-run home run for the Senators in the top of the sixth making it a 13-4 game.

Forbrick wrapped up the scoring with a one-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wesleyan had 11 hits with Ingram and Forbrick getting three each.

Mitchell Courtney (1-5) earned the win going five innings and giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out three.
