Hyre pours in 18 points to lead Little Bucs past Elkins, 56-32


TENNERTON – Mason Hyre tallied 18 points to pace the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Buccaneers to a 56-32 triumph over the Elkins Green Hornets here last Thursday in a varsity contest.

Coach Tyke Foster’s Little Bucs upped their record to 4-7 heading into Tuesday night’s clash with the homestanding West Fairmont Polar Bear Cubs. They will play host to the Suncrest Seals Monday and visit East Fairmont Tuesday.

The Little Bucs stormed into a 19-5 lead in the opening quarter, with Thropp firing in seven points, Hyre banging in five, Landon Hitt blasting in a 3-pointer, and Oliver King and Harrison Walker adding a bucket apiece.

With Kaiden McDaniels tallying five markers, Hyre tossing in four, and Kaiden Ball chipping in two, the Little Bucs took the second canto by a 11-10 edge to extend their halftime lead to 30-15.

Hyre went on a seven-point spree, Hitt drilled in another trey, Ball added a basket and Walker sank a foul shot to give the third period to Buckhannon, 13-9.

The Little Bucs claimed the final stanza by a 13-8 count on four points by Walker, two each by Thropp, Hyre, Ball and McDaniels and Cody Bailey’s charity throw.

Following Hyre in the scoring column were Thropp with nine, McDaniels and Walker with seven apiece, Hitt and Ball each with six, King with two and Bailey with one.

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Buccaneers had their scoring problems in the middle two quarters here last Thursday in a 35-27 junior varsity loss to the Elkins Green Hornets.

The Little Bucs outscored the Hornets in the first period by an 8-7 edge on Chase Spencer’s 3-point bomb, regular buckets by Zach Calef-Boring and Mark Hurt and Shawn Blandino’s free throw.

But they got only a basket and foul shot from Blandino, a goal apiece from Calef-Boring and Spencer and a charity throw from Ian Donnen in being outpointed by a 20-8 margin in the second and third stanzas.

With Hurst blasting in a trey and a deuce, Calef-Boring banging in a pair of twos and Spencer canning a goal, the Little Bucs claimed the final segment, 11-8.

Calef-Boring led the Little Bucs with eight points, with Spencer and Hurst tallying seven apiece, Blandino adding four and Donnen contributing one.

The Little Bucs improved to 4-7 going into Tuesday night’s road clash with West Fairmont’s Polar Bear Cubs. They will entertain Suncrest’s Seals Monday and visit East Fairmont Tuesday.
